Scrapped High Pressure Turbine Blades

Thu Mar 22, 2012 9:38 pm

Hi,
Our company processes rhenium containing superalloy scrap to produce rhenium. We typically buy casting scrap that is generated when the blades for high pressure turbine are made. I would like to know what happens to the used blades once they can’t be repaired. We never see them on the market.

I would think they get recycled in some fashion. Those materials are not cheap.
Why do Aerospace Engineering students have to turn things in on time?

They get sent to the scrap contractor. Usually in a big bin with everything. We don't separate nickels, titaniums, and aluminums like you do at home.

You would either have to go to engine overhaul shops, and get them to separate specific blades. They would charge you a premium for that, and it might not be worth your expense. Or, find out who the scrap vendors are, and pick over their inventory.

Those are numbers you would have to crunch. I'm going to guess that blades weigh much less than the associated scrap used to make them.

I will say, they do get scrapped a lot.
