Cathay Pacific Airbus A340 Anti-Collision Lighting

Wed Mar 28, 2012 1:46 am

While driving past DFW one nighty last week I stopped to watch a jet approaching landing on the west side runways. I just thought it was unusual instead of wing tip strobe lights this aircraft had a white light on each wingtip that look like it was winking at you. Both lights did this in tandem. As the jet past overhead I noticed it was a Cathay Pacific A340. I was just curious if there are some A netters on here that work for Cathay and can explain if these are the new LED type anti-collision lighting. Thanks.

Most likely one of the 748F flights. I don't think CX flies the A343 to DFW.

CX doesn't fly to DFW, period. So it would have had to have been a cargo aircraft, unless the OP is getting airlines mixed up?

Were the strobes blinking twice for each flash, because Airbus strobes do that? Boeing strobes do not.

I know the 787 and a lot of different newer bizjets have those kinds of wingtip anti colision lights that are white and flash slowly. I assume the 747-8 might too because it came out same time as 787. There are a couple Delta 757s that have the LED red anti collision lights on the bottom of the fuselage.

It's a 748F. The wingtip strobes do not flash like other aircraft. They pulsate instead. Looks kind of weird but you get used to it. Makes it easier to identify 748s and 787s at night for us spotters.

You won't have seen a CX A340 anywhere near DFW. The only North American destination for the jet these days is Vancouver.

On the 748 the tail still has a strobe but the wings are LED. I have also noticed that some airlines are upgrading to LED's on older aircraft.
