EWR Runway 22R Departures

Sun Jun 03, 2012 8:12 pm

I was at EWR today and noticed that departures off 22R were not making the standard left turn for noise abatement. After 30 minutes or so they began making the turn as usual. Why would this be? The time was approximately 1430 or so.

Possibly some weather in the area impacting the initial departure route? Another possibility, yet more uncommon could have been some type of ground activity that produced a small TFR in the area. Or aircraft in the area orbiting an event for a number of reasons that made traffic deviate from the normal flight tracks?

Just guessing for sure.

More often than not operations at the big 3 in New York are dictated by the other 2 airports. It may have been an issue of LGA arrivials landing on 22 and flying up the Hudson. Really hard to say without being there.

I believe he is talking about just the usual left turn, right turn thing though.

Termbewr,

Are you referring to the left to 190, then right to 220 at 2.3DME heading change?

If so, EWR got permission to not assign this noise abatement turn a certain amount of the time during peak periods. The issue was, it slightly reduces the number of departures per hour. They were able to get authorization to use three different headings of the 22s, the usual left turn, runway heading, and also a right turn. This allows more departures per hour when it counts.

I can't find an article but if you google Elizabeth noise abatement EWR etc. you'll probably find it as there were a few articles about it. The NIMBYs were complaining. This happened about 2-3 years ago.

Actually, all of the departures were using the runway heading so perhaps it was a small TFR or weather issue. Oddly enough, I flew out of LGA yesterday departing on 13 and the same thing occured. Aircraft were not making the right turn after departure but continued on the runway heading. The weather was not good so perhaps that was the issue.
