From what I heard, the lighted handrails on the MD-90 and 717 were a safety feature. If this were true, how come this never caught on with Boeing and/or Airbus? The 737NG (original interior, not Sky Interior) and 753 were offered with a handrail as an option, but does not have any lighting behind it. Boeing bought McD and could have incorporated it into the 737NG/753 handrail.
Also, when DL installed the bin extensions on the MD-90s, the lighted handrails have been removed.
