Don't "green" Airport Beacons Look Blue?

Fri Jun 29, 2012 11:45 pm

By FAA standars, the standard colors used for rotating airport beacons at civilian land airports are white and green. However, based on my observations of several airports, it seems to me that the "green" looks blue. Does anyone here agree? Why is this?

Nope. They look green to me.

However, tennis balls look green to me as well, though they're technically yellow.

Colors just look different to different people. I don't think there's any deeper mystery here.
I'm watching Jeopardy. The category is worst Madonna songs. "This one from 1987 is terrible".

No, they're definitely green. Not neon green or the sort of green that you'd see on a tree, but they're green.

To me they've always looked more blueish than greenish. I think a lot of it has to do with your individual sight. People see colors differently, especially in low-light environments.

Let's be honest. They are more of a spearmint color

Glad I am not the only one who has thought this while taxiing along at night.

Oh, the airfield looks like a bag of Skittles

In the US a least, old traffic lights (with non-LED lighting and colored glass lenses) look much more "bluish" than the newer LED ones. But they (and airport rotating beacons) still look green to me

Maybe more of a teal green? I onced owned a '90s Ford that was painted Cayman Green (cool color). More than one of my friends called my car "blue..."   It was a teal green.

My granddad had a green truck, except everyone else would say it was blue.

I have about 200 of the blue glass lenses (from an estate sale) and they vary from cobalt blue to teal.. add light to them and there is intensity differences as well.
