Source For Boeing Flight Control Description.

Fri Jul 06, 2012 10:37 pm

The AF crash unfortunately has provided a lot of detailed on-line information covering how the Airbus flight controls and displays work through both the BEA report and posts of knowledgeable posters. Is there an online source that describes in a similar level of detail how for instance the Boeing 777 or 787 controls and displays work? It would be interesting to know what the FD's display if the pitots ice up for example.

The nerd in me wants to compare the two.

Smartcockpit.com is as good a source as I've found for public info:
http://www.smartcockpit.com/plane/boeing/B777/

They have an OK 777 section (their 787 section is terrible). Boeing seems to be more diligent about keeping their material out of the public domain than Airbus. If you can find a Boeing/Alteon Systems Description book for the aircraft of interest (distributed by Alteon during General Familiarization courses) or an FCOM Systems Description section that will tell you what you want to know but you need to have someone "on the inside" to get access to those, usually.

Unfortunately, Airbus had little choice in the matter here. However, most of the tech details have been posted....and analyzed here.....by posters familiar with the Airbus. Thanks to them for that.

Thanks for the link Tom.

If you are willing you weed through a lot of under-informed/uninformed comments, there are many discussion topics on this site (particularly in tech-ops) which go through these topics in great detail. The most recent discussion of flight control differences is here A vs. B differences in FBW handling/behavior (by AirFrance Apr 15 2012 in Tech Ops) A great deal of discussion on flight deck indication and procedural differences between A330 & 777/787 are covered here Discussion On Issues Raised By AF447 (by CX711 Feb 23 2012 in Tech Ops)

Of course, in true a.net fashion... we could always start a new thread on these topics and re-hash it all over one more time!    I'm always up for that!

Thanks CM. I'll go back and review and try not to ask to many questions as it seems to irritate certain posters.

Yes, there are plenty here who take exception to any discussion being re-discussed. I'm OK with it. Particularly on this topic, as there is plenty of new information now on these topics contained in the AF447 final report. The people who don't like it are free to skip participating in the thread... as if that would ever happen
