Airport Ground Personnel Hiring

Fri Aug 10, 2012 7:41 pm

Emirates is scheduled to start service from IAD on Sept. 12, however I have not seen any postings for airport personnel such as ticket agent, ramp agent, baggage handler, etc.. on their website.

So, are most of the employees who wear an airline's uniform, contractors?

1. Do airlines usually subcontract out the airport duty jobs?
2. How can one be informed of anticipated openings? Who are the big airport contractors who supply employees?

Well the two big contractors at IAD are WFS and Swissport, so they will most likely be handling the bulk of the operations. But Emirates may have a few actually Emirates hired employees to ensure the airline is run tight.

So to answer:
1. At IAD, most of the international carriers use either Swissport, WFS, or DGS as their ramp people and their gate agents, but still have a few direct hired from the airlines to make sure everything is going accordingly.

2. It's hard to be assigned to a specific airline when you're working for the contractors unless you have a special language skill that will help. So basically you could be assigned to any airline by say Swissport, and you'll work with that airline.

Hope this helps.
