Anchorage International Airport Infield Parking

Hey Guys,

Just wondering if anyone knows why the foreign cargo carriers park on the infield ramp near the north terminal? Are they just making tech stops as it doesn't appear that any freight is loaded or off loaded. And i've even seen freighters pulled up to jetways at the north terminal for what i can only assume is customs; but can't customs just clear them on a hard stand?

Use of the North Terminal is simply making use of available ramp space. Might as well use the jetway since its available and to free up the air stairs for other use.

Pretty safe to say that most non U.S. cargo carriers are transiting ANC with mostly through cargo, or minimal load change. So for the most part, it's a fuel/tech stop and sometimes (perhaps often) involves a change of crew. The use of the gates at the North terminal is rather necessary at present, as several prime parking spots are closed for construction. This being the time of year when such work is possible!

While summer passenger carriers like Condor and Korean Air do make use of the jetways at the North terminal, most freighters parked there do not. The vast majority of cargo flights at ANC are met/dispatched by using common mobile stairs and the flights parked at the North terminal use the same.

It's actually easier that way!

Not wishing to stray from the topic too far, but during the day, when both foreign and domestic carriers routinely stopped in Alaska enroute to Asia, would these flights allow passengers to get off/on in ANC, or was it purely just a refueling stop? I am wondering if there was adequate room for aircraft during busy time of days?

Except, they (freighters) do? Year round.

Indeed. A few years ago, Romeo 7-10 were closed for reconstruction/resizing to allow for parking of 747-8F aircraft. This summer, Romeo 2-3-4 have been under construction, though I doubt they'll ever fit a 747-8 in those spots because of taxiways both forward and rear of the spots.

As PITRULES said in reply 5, I've never seen a freighter parked AT an N gate that was NOT using the jetway. Evergreen used to leave a 747-200 there for hours, with the jetway pulled up to it.

Waaaaaay back in the day, the carriers had ticket counter space in the north terminal. Not sure whether pax were allowed off (typically aren't in this country) on their way through, tho.
I know that in recent years when Cathay was bringing their horrid A340-300s through, the pax had to stay on.

Nearly always a crew change. We're six to eight hours from virtually anywhere on earth (I exaggerate), so this is an opportune place to change crews, without having to pay some of them to fly as reserve crew.
And, fuel is EXTREMELY CHEAP at ANC. Well, no, it isn't, but relative to other places, it's cheap..... it's a rip off any way you look at it!

I'm going back a few years; I remember Customs under the laws of the USDA required all foreign metal and U.S. carriers who originated at a foreign airport to dispose of their what was termed "International trash" at the first U.S. airport. As priorities go It was toward the top of the check list.

To my understanding International refuse is burned for an extra fee and not sent to a landfill. Military metal also was required to abide by the same rule/law. Flights originating in Canada were excluded but flight originating in Mexico were required to abide by the rule.

Indeed, and you could get in BIG TROUBLE if you took food off of an inbound flight. We all did it, but we knew we had to keep quiet about it!
That said, the other carriers along the hall in the N terminal would periodically knock on our door and bring us fresh fruit that had just come in. The height of illegality! But MAN was that fruit good!

Actually, we almost always use stairs instead of the jetbridge when parking freighters at the north terminal. It makes things easier and faster.

Right now, Romeo 2,3,4 are closed, Romeo 7,8,9,10 can be used but requires pushback, and R11,12,13,14 are open normal. About a week ago they had the fuel pits turned off at R7-11, requiring tankers, but they are on now. Papa 1,2,3 are also being used. They park freighters at the north terminal when they run at out of spots during the heavy hours (usually the morning and afternoon). This will continue until mid September I believe.

We see non-pax aircraft at the N gates a couple times a week. Especially now with some of the romeo parking under construction.

On the CX A340 note, when I stopped here in 1997 we deplaned. A section of the north terminal can be cordoned off to allow deplaning into an area to get something to eat etc without leaving the customs secure zone. I know of Cathay and China Airlines doing this. The latter did this up until just a few years ago.

Now, with both Cathay and Dynasty passenger service gone, and no longer any scheduled fuel stops for EVA flight 31, the North terminal is a quiet and lonely place once summer is done. Which leaves this casual observer hoping (seemingly beyond hope) that Icelandair's service will be well received, such that perhaps some year 'round service may be possible in the not too distant future.
