Out Of This World Concept Can It Be Done?

Tue Sep 18, 2012 7:49 pm

I think the way aircraft take off and land is outdated why hasn't anyone thought of a way they can take off and land an aircraft other then what is available today.
The harrier jet concept is good but maybe not feasible in commercial aircraft.
I'm asking this because they tell us that this is the most dangerous part of a flight.
If we can eliminate the danger flying will be a lot more safer

Taking off and landing are not the most dangerous parts of flying because of how they are performed. They are the most dangerous parts because they are:
- High workload.
- Close to the ground.
- Low speed.

You have to leave the ground at some point, and come back at some point. The dangers will remain even if you, say, use catapult launches and arresting gear.

But what about conveyor belts?

Vertical Take-Off and Landing is far more dangerous than a rolling take-off or landing.

That will be far more dangerous, as you'll have people getting into fistfights over whether that plane was really supposed to take off or not.

More dangerous than catapults or arresting gear, too.

Lots of people have thought of lots of ways. The problem isn't nobody thinking of another way, the problem is that nobody has, yet, figured out how to do it better than we're doing it now.

I'm curious what you think about the current method is "outdated."

Definitely not feasible. In addition to being far more dangerous, it's much more complex and an economic dead end with current fuel and powerplants.

The reason none of the alternatives have taken off (pun only slightly intended) is that they're not safer. As others said, you have to get close to the ground in order to takeoff or land. And getting too close to the ground is called "crashing".
