Altitude Restrictions On STARS/arrival Procedures

Mon Sep 24, 2012 6:07 pm

With regards to Altitude restrictions, particularly on arrivals/STARS. Are they predominantly for airspace restrictions or some other reason. An altitude restriction was pointed out to me on an arrival procedure for a London airport EG FL160 or below. It was suggested that the reason for that restriction was that if ATC decide to clear you direct to a final for the runway you are at the correct height for that amount of distance.

Any ideas?

There are a number of reasons:

Airspace for STARS at other airports
Airspace for other airports
Airspace agreements between sectors on handling traffic
Terrain
Setting aircraft up for an approach and/or positioning them for better handling by ATC.
Chicks dig winglets.
