United/Continental Cabin Chimes

Fri Oct 12, 2012 11:47 pm

I found a couple past threads on this topic, but they weren't exactly what I was looking for. When I fly I've always been curious what the various cabin bells/chimes mean. Does anyone know how they're used on United (or Continental, if their crews do it differently)?

I think most airlines are pretty similar. When taxing and approaching the runway you will hear a chime. That is a cleared for takeoff chime. Usually the FAs will let you know to verify your seat belt is fastened. After that you will hear a chime when the aircraft obtains 10,000 ft. which allows you to operate appropriate electronic devices. I won't get into the other ones because each airline is different when calling FAs for conversation or other communications. The opposite will occur on landing as far as turning off electronics and is also at about 10,000 ft. then you will here a cleared to land chime and the FAs will usually inform you again of to check your seat belts and that everything is stowed. Hope that helps.
