Boeing 717 Wing Design?

Sat Oct 13, 2012 2:40 pm

Does the 717 have the old DC9-30 wing with minor modifications or is it only similar in sice, but with the MD80/90 airfoil? How does it compare regarding drag lift ratio with newer designs?

I think the MD-80/90 used the same airfoil. They just extended the DC-9 wing with extra sections at the root and tip. It's possible the new sections had a different airfoil but that seems unlikely.

The wing, by itself, is better that most designs that came after it since it doesn't have any interference from a strut/engine and it's got very small (drop hinge) flap fairings. However, the newest stuff (787/A350/747-8) is better.

The 717 wing is basically the DC-9-34 wing design and has the same aerofoil section. The MD-80 and MD-90 also share the same section but have a different planform.

Root aerofoil DSMA-433A/-434A
Tip aerofoil DSMA-435A/-436A

The glass isn't half empty, or half full, it's twice as big as it needs to be.

I couldn't think of anything suitable witty as a response to the thread title...
Me: (Lining up on final) I shall now select an aiming point. || Instructor: Well, I hope it's the runway...
