Crew Bidding And Non-scheduled Ops

I have been wondering about this for sometime now. How do pilots ans FA's fly charter routes for the govt., sports charters, etc... Are they usually reservists who get the call or do crews actually bid for these? Flights like sports charters, flying troops overseas, or even maintenance flights. Like I've said, I am curious as to how this happens. I want to be a pilot some day, hopefully UA, and it is just a cool thought of flying one of my favorite sports teams around.   Many thanks in advance!

I've crewed at 3 airlines in the past (one charter, one holiday charter and one scheduled)

At some airlines they have an 'elite crew' list who get to do the charters. E.g. if it's a flight for VIP's then these crew will be used.

Some charters planned well in advanced appear on the crew bidding lists for bidding months, but if it's a VIP they already may have hand selected the crew.

Some last minute ones are either used by standby crews or they re-jig the crew scheduled and change other crew duties to the charter if it's about more than a week in advanced after the roster has been published.

Here, most sports charters are booked well in advance, so the flying is open to bidding. But they do attract a certain type, so they tend to be the same pilot crews. The F/A's though, are a part of a special group that only do sports charters.

Short notice charters, are just that .... so the crews are usually called out on reserve.

At my place of work, we just do on call charter with short notice. We just bid to work the first 16 days of the month or to work the last 16 days of the month, more or less. Then they just call when they need us.
Too lazy to work, too scared to steal!

At my airline they usually try posting them in "open time" and hope that crew members pick them up on their day off. If that doesn't happen, they are assigned to reserves.

Here if they know enough in advance they can be on a line or in open time but if they are sweet trips mgt will grab them before anyone knows about them. That's B.S.

We do lots of charter flying at WN; Sports and Military (with a few scheduled vacation charters out of MCO.)

99% of our charter flying is bid based on seniority and it pays double time for the charter leg so they tend to go senior.

Occasionally a RSV crew will be used to work the charter if it's last minute, but usually it's flown by a senior crew who bid it.

There are rare occasions when management will work a "charter" but it usually qualifies as a "Promotional" flight as opposed to a regular charter and those are assigned to Inflight Managers and are part of their salary (and they usually have NO IDEA what they're doing onboard because they don't actually, or haven't ever flown).

It's funny you should say that, as I had something like that happen with I flew the A320. I bid a Jetz pairing that was something like this:

YYZ-SJU, (sit for three days)
SJU-YYZ-MKE (sit for two days)
MKE-YYZ

That is the way a lot of the Jetz pairings are structured, mixing the "good" with the "bad". Now, I am not saying that SJU is better than MKE, but ... it was February.

A flight ops manager called me up to say he was displacing me for the YYZ-SJU-YYZ portion, but I still had to do the YYZ-MKE-YYZ portion. This was my answer. "Not an effing chance. You fly four times a year, and you want to snag the good part of a pairing, not a chance". He said he was only advising me as a courtesy, and that I didn't have a choice.

My answer? "Fine, fly to SJU, when you are one hour out of YYZ on the return, maybe even half an hour out of YYZ, I am booking off. As you know, Jetz pairings are high priority, so you WILL be drafted to go to MKE. So, don't just pack your golf clothes. And ... you will spend the whole time on the beach in Puerto Rico wondering if am going to do it!"

Needless to say, I did the whole trip! And ... MKE in February was actually a lot of fun!

The Jetz crews probably aren't too busy right now are they Longhauler?

In my FBO days I dealt with them quite a bit. One of the mechanics was nice enough to bring me some Ricards Red while I was furloughed from my airline and working at the FBO again. Always a pleasure to deal with those crews. I got to participate in a now famous incident involving the Calgary Flames, STL and a broken stairs truck.

I am not on the A320 any more, but when I was, I recall that the team charters accounted for about half of the Jetz flying. I was always amazed at the private companies or people that wanted to charter a 54 seat business jet!

Oh to have that much money! One charter I did was to a private island in the south for a wedding!

I remember the Jetz flying fondly. It was kind of like my old pre-airline charter days but without a lot of the hassle! And yes, the FBOs were superb!
