A380 ICE Reset Affects Onboard Water Supply

Mon Jan 14, 2013 7:54 am

Hey guys, about a month ago I was coming back home to LHR from a holiday in Dubai on board Emirates' A380. Something (which I found) weird happened and never guessed how these two were connected. I had experienced it for the first time granted I've been on many A380 flights.

So it was a normal routine takeoff from DXB around half 2 in the afternoon. Somewhere over Georgia the ICE entertainment system froze and everyone's screens went blank. This I was aware about- the system crashed or something and was being restarted by the crew. We were informed by the crew and were instructed "Not to touch the screens during the reboot".

Anyway, the system had successfully booted up and the ICE System was up and running. Everything was perfect until we reached over Western Europe and the ICE System decided to crash again. So as predicted the crew did a restart but what happened next confused me. The crew had informed us that the hot water supply had also been affected during the reboot and that there was no water being supplied to the main deck of the cabin. So people who needed to go to the lavatory had to use hot towels which were left by the crew in the loos.

So my question is, how and why are the water supply and the entertainment system connected on the A380?

Same electrical bus?

My guess as well.

I don't know what Airbus calls them, but one of the cabin utility busses might have been unstable, causing the ICE to crash. Eventually it shut down or shed load and bam, no hot water.

Something electrical anyhow...

The symptoms indicate that they were more stable than MS Windows ... my guess is a version of Linux.

If they were Windows-based, they'd be crashing every five minutes.

And to drag this back on topic ... well, I have no idea, I'm an IT monkey

Don't be fooled by desktop Windows. Windows can be massively stable with the right configuration and controls.

Also, it's an entertainment system. Hardly mission critical.

How is hot water supplied on most airliners? I'm assuming it comes from an electrical heater. Is there usually a hot water tank like in a house, or is it on-demand for each lav?

A single water heater in every lav. I didn't know any airplane had a centralized hot water system. There is usually a 2 Quart water tank and individual heater in every lav below the sink. It's news to me that the A380 has a centralized system.

If there was a single power bus that powered all the water heaters, then that could be the cause.

Does anyone know how EK's A380 showers are supplied?

It is normally on the same circuit on most Airbus airraft, probably they turned off the "commercial" push button which powers galleys, seats, ife etc. This is nice to have stuff, not anything one needs to fly the aircraft, except hot coffee.

They probably turned it off after a couple of resets, and decided on keeping it off until the cause is investigated on the ground. The cause maybe a potential cabin fire risk.

I have had similar before, the cause was a short in one of the coffee/tea makers, these are generic equipment made by third parties and fail time to time like your kettle or toaster at home may fail from time to time.
