What Is The Space Above The A380 Cockpit Used For?

Mon Jan 21, 2013 2:03 pm

There are several metres of space above the cockpit, forward of the upper passenger deck of the A380. I know some of it is taken up by the stairs, but what is the rest used for? Avionics and electrical systems are my guesses. Looking forward to hearing from the experts on here!

According to this diagram, it should be air conditioning systems.

Nice - a restaurant, duty free shops, cabins and staterooms. Which airline flies this configuration?

PromotionalMaterials Air I think

While most of the things on the diagram are BS, maybe the technical equipment bit is correct?

Yes, it is a poor drawing of the A380 and it doesn't seem to be an official drawing.

Correct, the upper avionics bay is there, with an entrance from the cabin (the top of the main stairway, on the right side)
The Flight Crew Rest Compartment is also stuck in there, between the main cabin and the cockpit itself.

Is it even certified to have passenger accommodation on the cargo deck as shown there? Or a passenger lift for that matter?

Entire top deck first class make it definite Fantasy Air no matter what, if there was that kind of F load to be had on a route we'd probably see every airline in the world trying to serve it multiple times a day with smaller planes...

We have people passing bricks on this forum about battery fires on the 787. Now imagine chefs doing table-side flambé during turbulence!

And notice how the entire main deck is Business Class.

Who drew that diagram? Four floors?! (Including baggage) and what appears to be the world largest fan blade in the empennage. Pinch of salt anyone?

That's the aft pressure bulkhead. Nothing wrong there.

Actually, I think that is supposed to be the aft pressure bulkhead.

But speaking of fan blades, for a good laugh, check out the Rolls-Royce Trent 900 at the bottom center of the diagram for the guy in the 'just about to be sucked in' pose.

'Pantry', 'galleys', 'restaurant', 'bar'..............'toilets' ... look like they got the important things on there.

I believe the answer is: Nothing. Emirates has showers here. I'm sure that'll keep going until the first time they hit turbulence and someone gets their skull impaled on the shower head. In the mean time, most airlines seem to use the space to carry extra air. Or... ?pictures? in Air France's case...

Shower above cockpit. Probably not a good idea. I thought there was a shower leak on one of the 380s. Cannot recall the airline. May be SG.

The diagram shows a number of seats forward of the front stairwell. If I am not mistaken, there are no passenger seats forward of this stairwell. Perhaps its a stretched version??

It was EK. They are the only airline currently operating with showers for passenger use.

Maybe the LH A346 answers your question.

As for the drawing... oh boy. First thing I noticed was that the flight deck seems to be on the same floor as the main deck, which we know it isnt    Get that drawing out of my face!

I thought these 'areas' were situated at the rear of the upper deck? I agree with you that they are wasted space, especially the Air France gallery. I think they need a few more furnishings to be a small lounge.

Maybe they could use it as a cloak room or for something else?

I believe they are ahead of the exit door and therefore do not meet the requirement to have an exit both forward and aft.

A380 nose arrangement

This area is also where the forward door of the upper deck will go for the A389.

Shower heads can be quite wide, and made of plastic.

To my knowledge, the only A380s currently equipped with showers are in service with EK and they are for the use of First Class passengers.

Maybe it's a Ryanair thing. Standing pax, standing resting crew.

I'd say that it works since the fuselage is probably a good 4 meters wide at that point. So they can stack the pilots crosswise.

This is how it looks in this compartment, it is the room for the aircond drum mixer (this was probably the only correct things in the first cutaway  ), where the recirculating air from the cabins is mixed with the fresh air from the air cond pacs in the wingroots, Tom calls it the snakepit   , good name:

Doesn't matter - in modern times, crew is barely paid to fly the plane... let alone smell good.
