AN-124 Short And Rough Field Capabilities

Tue Jan 22, 2013 7:34 pm

A bottle of our local brewer's finest on the line here...

I tried to find a runway requirement list or chart for an AN-124, and anything I could find assumed that you were moving something that weight close to the true capacity.

Scenario:
Oversized expensive item needing transportation.
Gravel Runway, 5000 feet long.
Nearest long paved runway less than 100 nm away where they could fuel up for a longer haul to destination.
Object weight 10 tonnes, but physical size means AN-124 is the only option.
Low required fuel and low weight suggest max performance!

What is the runway length requirement (balanced field, etc.) - would an AN-124 be able to safely do the job?

Would an AN-124 operator be likley be willing to do so off a gravel runway? (It was designed for this sort of thing, but the wear and tear might be more than what they would want to do, so does anyone know of other gravel fields they have flown into?).

Sure it's easy enough to contact someone, but since it's not to actually plan a charter, I would hate to waste their time - so I was hoping someone here might have a runway calc chart or table with a few more data points.

I am not quite sure if I read the graphs right, but it should just about make it.
