Does The B737-700/800/900 Take Containers

Wed Feb 20, 2013 1:38 pm

Does a B 737-700/800/900 Passenger plane take freight containers or pallets like the A 320/321/319 take the LD3-46?

I saw in a thread here that it was a disadvantage of the A 318 talking luggage or freight just as bulk.

They're said to be popular with A320 family operators in Europe.

I've seen Air Canada use the containers on the A319s and 320s before.

Only Air Canada in North America. I think the problem is that you have Capital in the Can's themselves sitting around and the loading time saved isn't really profitable TO save rather than Bulk loading with the system s already in place.

Air Canada uses containers on A320s and A321s, while the A319s are bulk loaded. LD3-45 containers (AKH series) are used.

The A320s and A321s have the ability to be bulk loaded if need be, for example when going to a destination that does not have can loaders.

Some airlines, like Swiss (I believe) also have them on A319s as well.

To name a few I do know LH & AF do for sure, but possibly BA as well....

LX has containerized their entire 32S fleet including the 319. BA, TP, AZ, SK, AF and OS do the same with the exception being that LX has a special "DZH" container, which is basically an AKH cut in half, to fit in the small space that the containerized 319s have in the aft hold. The old BD aircraft currently with BA have yet to be re-fitted with container positions.

LH has bulk 319's but containerized 320/321s.

Anyone working with these planes will tell you it is a massive advantage over bulk aircraft. Not just the speed of loading, but also with cargo tie-down, and locating bags that have to be offloaded!

The the A320 and A321 use containers, the A319 is bulk loaded, at AC.

Only if that option is purchased. At AC, the original AC A320s must be container cargo loaded only (other than the bulk hold), as the floor is not stressed for bulk loading. The rest of the fleet, the A319s, ex CP A320s, and A321s can be bulk loaded.

That is why AC Jetz A320s are all ex CP, as with some sports charters, containerized cargo is not practical.

The low ceiling and the slopes in the hold does not allow for the containters as they are currently designed to fit in the plane.

Is this simply a function of it being easier to bulk load a smaller plane??

OT but does the 757/739 etc have some mechanical system in the hold to assist the rampers getting the bags from the door to the far end of the hold?

The Boeing narrowbodies can be equipped with either the sliding trays on the 757 or the Telair Sliding carpet on all types to allow for loading/offloading with 1 person in the belly rather than 2. The A320 can be equipped with the sliding trays, the 319 & 318 I dont belive can have the trays as the holds are too short.

What's the sliding tray. Also seen references to telescoping trays? Can find references to the carpet systems but how do the others work?

Its a set of trays that slide into each other. You fill one tray and slide it back to reveal another tray that is stacked under it. You will repeat that process until completed.

Are the trays "powered" or just on rollers?

They're powered. The system is considered inop if it goes down. MTC will lock it in the "load" position so the bin can still be used until there is time to fix it (platforms extend all the way). Same thing with the majic carpet.
