Slot Controlled US Airport

Sun Mar 03, 2013 2:40 am

I'm wondering what airports in the US are slot controlled...

What airports are more controlled, if any, than others?

LGA/DCA- super slot controlled
JFK/EWR- hard to come by peak time slots
SNA- annual slot allocation program to limit Pax numbers and departures due to NIMBY's
The New American is arriving.

Keep in mind there are difference levels.

Some are imposed the FAA level - eg JFK, EWR, LGA due physical traffic constraints

Others are imposed at the local level - SNA, LGB, seeking to manage overall airport activity and hours of use.

HPN also comes to mind as a slot-controlled US airport along the lines of SNA and LGB.

ORD was slot-controlled twice (it no longer is), and there is occasionally talk of making SFO slot-controlled.

What year did EWR become slot-controlled?

From November-March ASE and EGE are slot controlled and apparently those slots are worth A LOT.

Was slot controlled up until 1970, then relaxed. Slots were re-introduced in 2008 after the two NJ Senators asked the FAA to do it as they were concerned that whatever traffic JFK lost from new slots would be shifted over to EWR and make delays even worse than they already were. Weird thing is that EWR always had the worst delays in the nation for so many years, but the FAA did nothing and probably wouldn't have done anything about it until those Senators got involved.

I believe HPN also has some sort of slot controls, but mostly because of NIMYs.
