Cockpits With A Step Up Or Down From The Door

Fri Apr 12, 2013 4:36 am

I wonder, what particular aircraft types have a step up or down from the cockpit door? I know the 757 has a step down, while the 767, DC-10, MD-11, and ERJ-135/140/145 have a step up. The 717, 737, 747, A320 family, DC-9, MD-80/90, and CRJ family do not have a step.

So, what about the 707, 727, 777, 787, A300, A310, A330, A340, A380, L-1011, DC-8, and E-jets?

A380 has both, as it is between the main decks.

No step on the L1011 TriStar, but plenty of "mushrooms" to trip over !

As the 707, 727 and 737 shared a common fuselage, I'd suggest neither the 707 or 727 had a step.

If memory serves they shared a common cross-section and upper lobe, but the lower lobe was not common.

The 777 has a step up, but not a very big one. In fact, it's small enough that it's easy to forget it's there the 1st few times and often gets stumbled on on the way out of the flight deck.

I certainly see what you're saying, but I don't often approach from the upper deck, so it's always been four steps up for me. Although, can we really count that since the steps also lead to the pilot's lav and crew rest (at least on CZ) first, and eventually then to the flight deck...

IIRC the 757 and 767 steps were put in place so they could share a similar cockpit geometry for the cross-rating. As to the 707, it was straight in (I'm building a model of one) like the 727/737. Starlionblue is right, the lower lobe on the 707 is about a foot deeper than on the 727 and 737. I also think the 757 has a different lower lobe, but I'm not exactly sure about the size difference.

So, what about the 707, 727,

The 727 has like 1"-1.5" step, not much.

E135/145 have a step-up. Around 10 inches.

The same probably goes for the A340 as well.

DC8 has a small step down, at least the 60 and 70 series. Those are the two types I worked years ago.
