Commercial Airline Pilot Informal Learning Survey

Sun Aug 18, 2013 7:21 pm

I am conducting a graduate research study on Commercial Airline Pilots’ informal learning. Recent aviation accidents have highlighted the importance of understanding all aspects of pilot learning. This is the first study to look at pilots’ informal learning outside of the training center. The FAA has recognized that current pilot training practices may need to be modified or changed. The one-size fits all approach to pilot training may no longer be sufficient in today’s aviation environment.

If you are a current US part 121 commercial airline pilots’ please take a few minutes to let us know how you learn outside of the training center. The survey is anonymous and should take approximately 10 - 15 minutes to complete.

Please note that the results of the study will be aggregated and will be available upon request at the conclusion of the study. For more information, or to receive a paper copy of the study, please contact the principle investigator by responding to this post.

Thank you,
Kevin

RE: Commercial Airline Pilot Informal Learning Survey

Thank you to everyone who has taken the survey. The survey is currently open to active US part 121 pilots to examine informal learning activities in commercial airline pilots. Based on the findings of this study, we plan to expand it to all pilots in an effort to understand how pilots learn outside of the formal learning environment.

If you are an active US part 121 pilot, we are interested in your informal learning activities, opinion on informal learning, and thoughts on how airlines could better support informal learning.

Regards,
Kevin
