DFW Runway 18R Closed?

Mon Aug 26, 2013 3:41 am

Went to Founders Plaza today. Noticed 18R was closed. Anyone know why? Maybe filling up some potholes?

Didn't see any activity ON the runway, but a LOT of activity on adjacent taxiways. Suspect they closed the runway because there was no easy way to exit it. Primary crossing taxiways only: A, B, Y & Z. In 27 years I have never arrived from the southwest and landed on 13R until.... yesterday. 17R had higher than normal takeoff use an hour later as it appeared that all but "true" westbound flights were sent to 17R. Still, not too bad.

It's been closed since saturday morning until September 22nd.

18L/36R will be closed from sep27 until oct 27.

Same thing happened last year although for a different reason (or maybe the same reason.)

Wow, can't believe yesterday was your first time to land on 13R. I've landed on it a couple of times, as well as 31R a few times. They are used every day so that is surprising!

Cheers.

Happened to me one time on a MIA-DFW flight on a 777 several years back. Talk about a bizarre arrival sequence.

Happened to me in the spring of 2006, AA MD80 DCA-DFW at night. We had gotten routed over Oklahoma City for WX. The most "lost" feeling I've had at DFW, though, was Landing at night on 17L. I had no idea where we were until we were half way to the gate.

When arriving on the SW gate, one lands on 18R and sometimes 17C (traffic permitting). But never 13R.... unless (obviously) one of the 18's is closed to arrivals. 13R arrivals are normally reserved for NW gate arriving planes who must descend "early" to allow the SW arriving planes to descend and land on the 18's (normally 18R). The "uniqueness" was flying the JEN9 STAR and getting vectors to 13R. It is normal procedure to fly the UKW2 STAR to land 13R.

Only extremely unusual thunderstorm activity would cause a MIA arrival to be routed to JEN9 arrival and then land on 13R. Most logical being the east side runways were closed.

KenanC, you should direct your question to A.Net member KC135TopBoom as he is an Airfield Operations Officer at DFW Airport.

I did see an RFP out for rubber removal on the DFW website a few months back, so that could be a possibility.

I've landed on 13R more times than I can count. I used to travel to ABQ a lot, and well over half my ABQ-DFW flights from about 2004 until 2010 landed 13R. Occasionally, OKC-DFW (another route I fly frequently) will land 13R. Heck, even managed 13R on a 777 FRA-DFW a few years back, albeit during some thunderstorms.

I'm confused my your message by saying "but never 13R"...?

During normal ops, I have landed several times on 13R and in the winter (with North winds), on 31R.

Cheers

The normal landing runway arriving from the southwest from glen rose is 18R/17C and normally never 13R. The configuration normally isn't conducive to landing on 13R arriving from the southwest.

It has nothing to do with never landing on 13R. He's done that a million times. He's just never landed on 13R after arriving from the southwest over glen rose.

It took me 8 years to land on 13R after arriving over glen rose.

That's the weird thing. We were definitely on the CQY5 (at the time) arrival. We passed approximately over KGKY, before turning downwind for 13R.

I've only done it once or twice coming from AUS.

Ha,

I say that, and then my next flight, which I'm currently on, lands on 13R after the JEN9 arrival.

As stated, Runway 18R is closed for approximately 30 days. When 18R reopens, Runway 18L will close for approximately 30 days. A variety of maintenance items are being accomplished during the closure.

While CQY and JEN arrivals on 13R are unique, they certainly aren't uncommon. Aside from the long-term closures going on now, there are also morning runway inspections where each runway is closed for a short time. This will cause aircraft to land non-standard runways from their STAR.

One question I have. Why are the SW gates normally directed to 18R and the NW gates 13R? Doesn't this have the effect of arrival paths over the two fixes crossing each other? If it was the other way around with SW going to 13L and NW 18R...there would be no crossing of traffic.

There isn't a conflict here. Aircraft coming in over JEN (the SW corner) will remain at 11,000 feet until downwind. There, they will descend to 3-5,000 feet depending on other traffic and turn base for 18R. They will generally overfly the 13R approach course at about 5,500-6,500 feet.

Inbounds from UKW (NW Corner) that get a straight in for 13R will be somewhere close to 3,000 feet when passing under the 18R downwind.

13R from the NW is ideal as it is straight in and it misses a great deal of the satellite traffic in the area. If a jet from the SW gets 13R, they will be low and on a different course much earlier to miss both the satellite controllers traffic as well as west and northbound departures off of DFW climbing to 10,000. This is why there is a 5,000 foot crossing restriction on the RNAV departures -- it allows the low level traffic to pass under at 4,000 in that area.
