Largest Aircraft With Non-Retractable Gear

Wed Aug 28, 2013 7:04 pm

Did a quick google search but couldn't find anything.
What would be the largest aircraft with a non-retractable gear system? C208? There has to be something bigger yet.

Beat me too it Vzlet.....almost but same plane of thought.

But I think I need to blunt out that ANT-20 had a big brother with an additional pair of motors mounted in a pod over the fuselage.

It was flow as a propaganda machine and was destoyed when an idiiot flying an escorting I-16 fighter (for size comparison) decided it would be cool to loop the loop around the wing.....he didn't make it.

To be fair this was the third loop so he was at least trying to miss 2/3 of the time.

Some C208s have retractable gear.

The Ju 52 is pretty big too. Once very common, still a few active.

How about the Blackburn Beverley? Double bogie mains hanging out in the breeze...

For sure that plane is bigger than the Kalinin K-7 though on another vein, the latter's landing gear assemblies look to be larger.

How to measure biggest?

In terms of wing span and length, it's the ANT-20.

In terms of MTOW and power, it's the Beverly.

In terms of poor utility and technological dead ends, Both.

Actually come to think of it, did the Messchermit Gigant have fixed gear?

What a great plane. The gear probably wasn't worth retracting, given that the plane looks like it would cruise roughly about as fast as I can walk anyway.

If we are talking in terms of all aircraft in general, the Mil V-12 has the Beverly beat by about 100,000 lbs. and 11,400 horse power.

Good point. Didn't think about the helicopter side of aircraft.

Also fits into the poor utility and technological dead end category.

Yepp. Pretty sure it did. Much lighter than the Beverly in any case.

Ah yes, the aptly named "Homer" (Homer Simpson perhaps?). I knew the V-12 was huge, I never realized it was that huge (comparing those numbers to the Beverley).

The NASA Helios Prototype HP01/03 would at least beat the ANT-20 in terms of span (247ft vs. 206ft).

If it had ever been built, this would have won hands down, I'd expect.

Ok, lets split this into catagories.
Largest size by MTOW, Aircraft size, currently in commercial service for both pax and cargo ops.

I have another candidate : The Messerschmitt 323 Gigant.
Can't upload images due my pàhbucket trouble, but see the GGANT
At 44 t it beats the Ant 20, though a bit smaller in dimensions.

The Boeing 367-80 was also fitted with multi wheel non-retracting undercarriage, for flight tests as part of Boeing's bid for the CX-HLS program in 1964.
