PA Announcements

Wed Sep 11, 2013 11:19 pm

Hello to all,

Can airline pilots hear or listen to PA announcements from the FA when the cockpit door is closed? Maybe via the audio control panel when the PA volume control is up? I always wondered if pilots could hear details on emergency briefings and gate connections while flying. I also noticed that many FSX add-ons allow you to listen to PA announcements while in flight so I wonder how realistic that is. Any insight into how this works on a real airliner would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Yes, on the A320 we can listen to all PA's that the flight attendants make. Also, we use the observer audio control panel to record all the PA's from the cabin crew on the CVR.

In context, while any cockpit communication including to/from the cabin must be recorded on the CVR, EASA regulations state that cabin-to-cabin communications need not be recorded. Not sure about FAA but I imagine the regs are similar.

I don't believe that the FAA requires it either. We record it as part of company procedure.

Cockpit can also override the FA on the PA. (Sounds like something from Good Morning Vietnam).

Yes, and we had a 2 hr delay recently because the PA was not working in the cabin, until someone found that the spare ACP in the cockpit had PA selected to transmit. Drrrr.
