Interesting C-17 On TV

Tue Oct 15, 2013 5:30 am

So I was watching some TV the other day and saw an ad for a new Marvel Comic's series called S.H.I.E.L.D - and then this popped up right at the end: http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__...1/S.H.I.E.L.D._Globemaster_002.jpg

Was discussing with my students how this could/couldn't work - Just thought I'd post here as well to get some more ideas thrown around

I ranted about this on an SF site already.
- The engines on the rear wing make little sense. They would be stuck in the jetwash of the other engines plus turbulent downwash from the main wing. If a C-17 needs six engines, the way to go is to stick them all on the same wing, An-225 style.
- The rear wing makes little sense, at least in its current form. The added lift would induce a large pitch down moment, making the whole contraption rather unbalanced. A triplane like the Su-47 Berkut, or a canard aircraft like the Piaggio Avanti show that wing distribution must be different. If nothing else having a lifting wing under a downward lifting stabilizer is absurd. Trivia: in landing scenes flaps extend from both wings.

On a wider note on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., I feel that the show has great potential but so far has been awfully bland.

It also appears to have two or three decks inside, each about as spacious as a 777.

Don't forget that it is entirely occupied by very pretty people. Very much at odds with air travel as I have experienced it.

But they need that lift to balance the weight (and the moment, and the thrust) of those extra engines!
The extra airfoil isn't much of a problem per se - you can tune it all you want to turn it into a controls problem, and even then it should be manageable - but it is useless. Unless there's more to this plane than we've seen so far - such as tilt wings. Or maybe it's two planes in one.

I've enjoyed the show so far - but what I'm really waiting for is more superheroes, more Nick Fury, and more Robin Scherbatsky.

Aa far as I can tell, no tilt wings.

more Robin Scherbatsky.

Statements from the production company say Robin won't do more in Season 1 than her cameo in the pilot due to commitments to the last season of HIMYM. After that, who knows? Like you, I'd like to see more of her.

... yet! (unless there's a definitive description of the plane somewhere out there? We can't really trust what we see on TV here!)

My point being that there has to be more to this airplane than we've seen so far.

It's a way to get around copyright infringement and royalty payments to Boeing, plus it looks really cool with two wings and six engines. Physics aside, you guys are railing against a universe that has already seen an alien invasion and Norse gods taking to the streets. Its comic book fiction, enjoy it.
Pilots are idots, who at any given moment will attempt to kill themselves or others.

Ludicrous design, sure.

...But compared to a hovering aircraft carrier, this is one of the sanest technological design in the entire S.H.I.E.L.D. universe.
I'll do my own airline. With Blackjack. And hookers. In fact, forget the airline.

Of course it is. But then the show (and all superhero/sci-fi movies) wouldn't be all that interesting if all the technology they had was completely believable off-the-shelf products, would it?

They "explained" the engines on the rear wing in the last episodes. The engines can tilt, allowing the plane to hover.

Reminds me of the old 90s TV show Team Knight Rider, when their flying HQ was what appeared to be a modified C-5 Galaxy with tilting engines that allowed for VTOL operations.
