I've worked at SEA for several years for the local airport authority et. al. Ask any questions you want (excluding security-related topics, of course!). I've discovered most of the best spotting/photo locations, both ground and concourse level, if that's what you're interested in...

Thats what I was getting at... I have been to the park on the west side of the runways, but, as you may know, it will be closing soon due to construction of the third runway. What are some other good locations? I have most recently been in the A concourse and that doesn't have a view at all.

The best locations depends on the traffic flow. In the mornings (sun from the east), and with traffic landing/departing to the south, I think the best place to watch is at the park by the employee parking lot. It's immediately west of 24th Ave. So. a couple blocks north of Interstate 518. There's a very large water tank that's hard to miss. It's also good for northbound departures, but by that point they're usually quite high. During the afternoon, the sun will be on the backside of the aircraft. Also during the mornings, try the west side of the North Satellite (Gate N-12), Concourses C & B facing the runways. Around Gate N-2 at the N.S. affords good pictures of United taxiing by. At the Gate C-1/C-3 area you can capture some great Alaska tails. Horizon can be obtained in the Main Terminal at the windows north of The Carvery restaurant. At the South Satellite looking north, some great departure photos can be had with a south aircraft flow. Concourse A, for your info, will be closing soon for reconstruction. It is the last part of the "original" terminal left. On the west side of the field, I don't have any recommendations except for Viewpoint Park. I don't know the closing date, but I think it will be open for a couple more months. Underneath the Runway 16L/16R approach lights can be fun (So. 154th St)-Use caution for numerous large trucks transporting dirt fill for the 3rd runway, there's lots of them! The golf course at the south end of the field is also easy to get to (So. 200th St.). Have fun.

Thanks a lot. I used to live right by there, but have never found a great spot to watch from, except for the Viewpoint Park. Today I was driving around in that area and decided to check out the park, but to my dismay, all roads accesing it have cement blocks across them   . I was actually on 24th AV this evening as well- right by the parking lot and City of Seattle water tank- and saw a couple of 757s come in, but it was kind of hard to see because of the sun's position. I had never found a spot near the golf course, but they rarely come in that way, it seems. And thanks for the info on the terminals. I have usually just been in a rush to get to planes so I haven't really looked. I just caught a flight out of concourse A a few weeks ago, and it shows its age! Especially the TWA area at A7. Have you seen the new tower going up? Its (surprisingly) on the east side of the terminal! (its just off of the cargo road i think) Can't wait to go and visit that... Thanks again for all of that info- I have really only spotted from Viewpoint Park, and i think thats closed now.

Viewpoint Park is still open from the south on 12th Ave. So. 12th is closed off north of the park to So. 154th because of the dirt fill going on for the 3rd runway. On the new tower..... I don't know how its location was chosen; it certainly looks to me like some areas of the field won't be visible (around the south satellite, maybe). However, I believe it's going to be around 250 ft. high, or somewhere around there. Within a few years, watch for a new north-end terminal to be built where the tower is. From the plans I've seen, several cargo buildings are going to be torn down (to be relocated south of the field) and a two or three pier terminal will be put up with about 40 gates. Maybe a few years is a little optimistic, but at least it's on the drawing board!

Wow... I had no idea their plans were so large. Yeah, I was quite surprised one day when I came out of the terminal to find a new tower right across the loading road. It probably has to be huge to see the whole airport from there. I guess with all of this construction, things will be all messed up for travellers. Thanks for the directions to the park. I usually come in from the north or west, but I will have to try the south on 12 AV. The sign at the entrance is supposed to give 30 days notice of its closing.

So, has anyone found out after all whether Viewpoint Park is closed or still open?

I am assuming it is still open. I haven't been there for a while, but when my flight took off from SeaTac in mid-August, I could see cars at the park. If the sign doesnt have a date on it, then it will be over a month until it closes. But I have a feeling it will see its end soon.

I was at the viewpoint park earlier this week and it was still open. However you can only drive to it from the south. All roads from the north are closed. I emailed the Port of Seattle a few months back and I have included it below. The news doesn't sound too promising. Also I have included the email from the lady that I contacted. Might be a good idea for everyone to send email voicing his or her concerns about the closing of this important amenity.

St Laurent, Marlys []

Dear Mr. xxxxxxx: Your question about Viewpoint Park at Sea-Tac Airport was
forwarded to me. I am sorry to report that no decision to replace the park
has been made, although there have been discussions about optional sites.
We are very aware of how popular the park is, and hate to lose this amenity
for aviation fans. Unfortunately, due to security and land-use reasons, no
new site has been found that can compare with the current site. You are
welcome to check back with us in a few months, but as things stand at this
moment, there are no plans to replace the park. You may be interested to
know that the airport is undergoing a huge upgrade, and the potential for a
good viewpoint from inside the terminal is being looked at. --Marlys St.
