I bought the models 9V-SPL and 9V-SPK of Dragon Wings. I bought from them as they make the actual differ the aircrafts have, but starjets don't, they have both but the only differ is the rego. One is L and the other K.

I got the Dragon Tropical for Christmas. 9V-SPK. It seems to have more detail than the Starjets version.

I have from both companies. Both are very nicely done. I do like the StarJets version though more because of the metal wings, which I think are more realistic.

Mr 747,

Try getting in touch with cedarjet_shop@netzero.net. from whom I just bought a Singapore Airlines 747-412 'Torpical' 9V-SPK (regular box) (DW55119B) for $ 38.99. I think this price is very reasonable considering the same is being auctioned on ebay for much more. Hurry!

Their address is Cedarjet at 12864 Biscayne Blvd # 278, N. Miami, FL 33181.

Good luck.

Arshad,

The better model is best answered on whether you are for DW or SJ, or whether you prefer 1:400 or 1:500 scale. I have both DW's and the SJ and I love all of them.

Though SJ is a smaller model, it is by no means any less beautiful than DW. Though the latter's wings are made of plastic, I think they reflect a more detailed and appropriate reflection of the real life portion of that aircraft.

If money is not a factor to consider, buy both, keep what you like better and sell the other one on ebay.

Arshad,

The quality of both models is excellent. I have the DragonWings 1:400 version as that is the scale I collect and I LOVE it! (Only a CLOSE second to my DW744 Qantas -Wunala Dreaming! ;D )

The two companies offerings are different in a number of ways... I have seen the StarJets 1:500 version and it looks more detailed in the hatches/vents department, (additional small vent indications and anti-collision markers) however, unless you are a stickler for the ALL METAL thing, I also think that the plastic wings/stabilizers on the DW (DragonWings) are more in scale and detailed. I also don't like the assembly joints on the SJ (StarJets) model.

These also differ in that the DW model has plastic gear which can be removed and replaced with "gear-up" hatches, which are provided and put on the (also included) stand. The SJ model has fixed non-removable metal gear and no stand. How you display it can make a difference... The DW models have more radical "Inflight" dihedral angles on the wings. The SJ's have purposely "non-flying" at-rest dihedral to them. The SJ also seems to have generally more accurate paint than my DW model, which is ever so slightly off square in the nose-on view, but not noticable from any other view.

The difference between the DW "SPL" and "SPK" models is that the SPK is a re-release of a corporate run Dragon did for Singapore Airlines after they saw the public release of the SPL version. The SPL version has some minor flaws in the scheme from a top view, as they didn't have a photo of that angle when making the model. This has been corrected in the SPK version... that, the logo on the stand and the reg-no. are the only differences between them.

Is the SPK worth more than the SPL version? Who knows? It all depends on your pocketbook vs. your desire! The SJ will be cheaper on the whole than the DW due to size, release date and volume of production. But if you count how many "Tropicals" of all variants DW has done, then I think the SJ will eventually be a shorter run and its price will still be less right now as it's just been released.

So... you have to "pick your poison" as they say...

Cheers!

I recently picked up a 1/400 Dragon Wings Premiere Collection 747-412 9V-SPK. It is a beatiful model. Unfortunately, they jacked up the price a little, HK$465 vs the normal HK$350 or so. This was at the Toy store in the Departure area at HKG. If anything, they will probably get more expensive as time goes on.

Hi all,

the two Tropical B744s of Singapore Airlines are totally identical . . . and the differences reflected in the Dragon Wings models of 9V-SPK and 9V-SPL are the result of circumstances.

9V-SPL was produced first, using slides taken of the aircraft during a ramp visit. I had attempted to almost lay on the ramp to shoot the base, but had no access to a top-down view of the plane. I had also provided the illustration on the box.

SIA's Hong Kong's office obviously was one of the first to see the release of this model, was sufficiently impressed by it and commissioned DW to produce a corporate version (9V-SPK), and this time round, the airline provided the detailed drawings which resulted in a more accurate rendition of the Tropical livery, especially the top.

I hope this clarifies the existence of "differences" between the Tropical livery on the two B747-412s.

Geez Gundu...

Where do you live? We can get both reg's in the SJ model for under $30.00 here in the US... The DW is another matter.... usually going for around $50-60.00 US on EBay and any dealers that still HAVE them! :p
