NYC Center Frequencys..

Mon Feb 19, 2001 1:43 am

Ok my question is ...are planes flying over lets say boston,NYC,or other big cities supposed to call up the citys center??
Everytime i hear about the NYC center and i was wondering......IF so, then what is the Frequency for N.Y.C. center and would I be able to listen to them with my Pro-79?? I live in betwen JFK and LGA...

"New York Center" doesn't refer particularly to New York City. The actual Center is out in Ronkonkoma, I think, and it controls traffic at fairly high altitude (say higher than 15000-17000 ft or so) over NYC and some surrounding area. "Are they supposed to call up..."-- well, if you're talking about airliners then whichever ATC guy they're talking to tells them when to switch to the next guy, and on what frequency.

If you're in Queens you'll see most all the arrivals into Boston from Philadelphia and points further south crossing above JFK NEbound, descending through 28000 ft or so, and somewhere around that time they'll switch from NY Center on 125.325 MHz to Boston Center on 134.0 MHz. You'll also see Air Canada and other flights from Toronto or Montreal to Bermuda and the Caribbean; they'll also be on 125.325 at some point. Flights from Washington-Atlanta etc to Europe also come over JFK and will switch from 125.325 to 124.525, I think.

Here are the New York Center High Altitude (above FL 230) and the sectors
assigned:

BARNEGAT: 132.15
BARNSTABLE: 135.8, 125.925
BIG FLAT: 133.475
ELK MOUNTAIN: 132.175
MATAWAN: 125.325, 127.175
MILLVILLE: 134.325
NANTUCKET: 121.125
121.325, 128.575
PHILIPSBURG: 132.875

I live in Charleston, South Carolina and can pick up Jacksonville Center controllers talking to aircraft over CHS. JAX center has a transmitter very close
to where I live. If New York Center has a transmitter close to your residence, you
might be able to do the same.

And we forgot to mention that you'll hear the pilots talking on those frequencies, even though you won't hear most (or maybe any) of the controllers. Flights from Boston and Hartford (and Europe) to Washington and beyond will usually be on 127.175, passing northwest of NYC, though I think this sector is sometimes taken over by the 125.325 controller. As they continue southwestward they will switch to 134.325 or 133.475; on those two frequencies you'll also hear departures from the New York area. By the way: on the radio when they tell the pilot to switch to 134.325 they say "one three four point three two"-- they always drop the final digit.

I think that's a typo in N757AT's list: 128.575 should be Philipsburg? Used to handle arrivals into EWR-LGA from the west.

QuadstarA343E!, if you want some high attitude charts, you could consider to buy them at the FAA store, they offer mail-order. I bought my NY sectional chart from them too!

If you want a Xerox of the high-alt chart (from last year) e-mail me. Or I could send you a year-old set of US high charts for $7.

As for where places are, you can look them up on http://www.airnav.com. The only complication is guessing whether the place is a fix or a VOR, since airnav.com lists them separately. If you want to hear more about some places you're likely to hear e-mail me.
