Dripping Water Inside A 747

Mon Aug 13, 2001 8:26 pm

On a (rainy) Lufthansa flight from JFK to Frankfurt about 5 minutes after t/o the cabin crew told the pax that there is water dripping out of the ceiling. They said, that this is a normal situation in planes of type 747-400 and that we should not bother about it.

From my seat (almost in the last row) I could not recognize any water on the ceiling. I either do not know, if the water was dripping from ceiling or out of the A/C-Outlets...

However, has anyone here made similar experiences aboard a 747?

I have experienced it in several aircraft. In particular: An-24, Il-62 and Tu-134.
The Tu had a leaky pressure cabin (as admitted by the crew, they were flying at a reduced altitude because of that), and the An looked like it had seen better days.
In the Il, passengers next to doors were complaining about draft leading me to doubt the pressure cabin on that one.

That of my mind,
it is possible that the airconditioning system causes some condensation as it cools the air to below the dewpoint.
This would be most common in hot and humid weather.
I wish I were flying

Hi there,

I had a similar experience with a Lufthansa A321 on my flight from Munich to London-Stansted. When we were pushed back, the crew turned on the air condition and white smoke came out of it. A passenger called for the stewardess thinking there is a fire somewhere in the cabin, but the stewardess told him, that this was the humidity of the air condition.

Seems to be normal, especially in LH aircraft  Wink/being sarcastic

I flew from Miami to London Heathrow in a 747 classic a couple of months ago, and got soaked by water 'dripping' (more like pouring) from the ceiling about 10 mins before landing, or so, just as we were descending through the clouds. The flight attendants brought some tissues, and said it was due to condensation in the air conditioning system. Apparently it is a common problem on the 747.

I was on Delta L-1011 from KMCO to EDDF and there was some water leaking on my shoulder from above. I guess from what I see here, it happens on several aircraft types. I thought it was the A/C system. I too, like Hias saw humidity, but all this when away when we took off.

I work on a 757 cargo every day and we have that problem too. It is A/C condensation. I know this because the first time I saw it, I got worried and went to find the captain. He looked at it and told me what it was. As said above, when the air is humid this happens a lot (a common thing here on the atlantic coast). Hope this helps.

Yes when we were decending in a UAL 744 in Chicago all of the sudden a guy in front of me in one of those first suites had water dripping on him. It was strange and he didnt like it.

I was on a Northwest Airlines flight from Detroit to Paris being operated by a DC10. There was water dripping from the cieling. I remember it was running down the side of the overhead bin and dripping on a passengar so of course he got to find another seat.
