The A/C In Cast Away.... Was It A MD-11?

Mon Aug 20, 2001 12:22 pm

Hi,
I was just wondering, was the Fedex A/C in the movie Cast Away a MD-11 or a DC-10? I dont beleive they showed shots from the outside and the cockpit looked like a MD-10 or MD-11 one, pretty much te same thing. And was the flight operated MEM-KUL?
Thanks for replies

It was a MD-11!
I gues the flight was from HOL (Hollywood) to HOL (Hollywood)  Smile/happy/getting dizzy.

There are many unrealsitc scenes in teh movie, like Engine No. 2 still running after the crash ... impossible

I saw the movie twice and didn't see any scenes where it was obviously an MD-11...was it the cockpit? Anyway, with all the cooperation FedEx gave the movie-makers, I would have thought that the engine thing in the water after the crash (which was one of the eeriest/spookiest things I've EVER seen!) could have happened. Wouldn't the FedEx folks have seen that as 'impossible' and nixed it from the screenplay?

Here's a question for all of you: What was a package destined for Texas doing on a FedEx flight bound for the South Pacific??

It was an A310 on the ground, and an MD-11 in the air.

And, did you guys see much evidence of the crew using their checklists to solve their emergency? Plus, what happened to their satellite phones!  Smile

That was sooooo stupid how they were lost and they were checking on the maps! All they needed to do was look infront of them on the Nav displays.

I think every aviation movie or movie that uses an airliner as a prominent part, needs an expert listed in the credits. You have 'Best Boys' and 'Key Grips'...so why not 'Fly Boy' or 'Fly Gal?' This is the designated expert to make sure the scenes are plausible to the aviation people who look for such things? Union scale would be fine, thank you very much  Smile/happy/getting dizzy even though unions are often (but not always) a bunch of money-grubbing slugs who care only for how long their coffee breaks are

The lady in Texas was shipping the package.. I guess it was going to some guy in the South Pacific. Oh, did the plane depart from MEM? I can't remember... If so that wouldn't work either.. all pacific departures from MEM goto ANC first. They can't make it all the way.

Regarding not using checklists.... many emergency checklists are required to be committed to memory. In an emergency, there isn't time to fiddle around with a checklist. Responses must be almost instinctive to give the utmost attention to the situation at hand.

Shushka, I believe that was a 767- I don't think FedEx even has any A300s. I could be wrong, but that really didn't look like an Airbus to me.

They do have A300s and I always see them parked down at SLC. All you have to do is look at the cockpit windows, that gives it away all the time

Jason Seiple is right. There are read and do checklists (engine start/pre-takeoff etc.) and there are do and read checklists (emergency). During a failure, you do not have time to look for the checklist and read it off. You must do whatever comes to mind, then when things get under control, find the checklist and do what has not already been done.

If you have the dvd verson, you will see some behind the scenes footage of how they did the plane crash scene. You will see it was a md11 because before they put the rest of the effects on the scene, you will see the winglet and the tail.
