It really depends on what you want.

If you want real scenery for cities, and I hear the ATC is amazing as well, buy MSFS2002.

If you want a more realistic flight model where the plane performs more realistically, buy X-Plane.

Those guys use X-Plane to develop their gyro plane thing, because the flight model is so good. Boeing buys X-Plane as do airlines and tons of experimental plane builders.

X-Plane more realistically simulates a plane flying through the air.

Hmmm, are downloads from X-Plane compatible with FS2000? So many decisions! Thanks a lot though!

No.

They are completely different.  Smile

I say buy them both, or plan to buy them both eventually. Whichever you want now, scenery and ATC in the case of MSFS2002, or better flight model which is found with X-Plane.

Also I don't think editing planes is as easy in MSFS as it is in X-Plane. Or making additional scenery and objects but I'm not sure. I haven't used MSFS, this is just stuff I hear and read about.
