St. Maarten - Princess Juliana

Fri Nov 30, 2001 7:22 pm

Hi,

I've just looked at some great pictures about St. Maarten - Princess Juliana (SXM / TNCM). It's a very nice airport! My best airport is Kai Tak, then TNCM! But I don't know where it is located. On the Atlantic Ocean? I can't find it out in my map! Anyone of you have been there before? How's the airport? I think it's cool, isn't it?

Best,

St. Maarten is located in the Caribbean region, and is part of the Netherlands Antilles.
You can find a very nice scenery for the airport (FS2000) at http://members.aol.com/TcaScenery/scenery.htm

Location/Size - The island is in the Caribbean Sea, 18.02 latitude and 63.07 longitude, 150 miles southeast of Puerto Rico. it covers 37 square miles, with Dutch St.Maarten on the South spanning 16 square miles and French Saint Martin on the North covering 21. I checked this topic out just now, because I was curious as to why people mention this airport. I saw some more photos, and I was impressed Wow!.

I saw the photo of an Air France 747 approaching and I had no idea that it came that close to the beach before touchdown! I'm going to try an FS2002 flight some time to this airport. By the way, is this one of the reasons why you all like the airport? Or is there more to this destination?

They are really cool, and Boeing757fan, don't reply with a sarcastic statement and show your friend's "cooler" screenshots!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I'm not criticizing or anything, but I can find many things wrong with the "Sint Maarten" scenery. 1. It's called Saint Maarten. 2. There is a beach that the plane comes in over, its not stuck in the middle of a lake-thingy. 3. The airport is not stuck closely between 2 mountains! Anyway, the other sceneries are pretty good, but I don't have FS2000, I have 2002!

I just tried a flight in St. Maarten, and the mountains were not there. Any place where I can download a mesh for this? I have FS2002.

Cramos,
there is a very good FS2002 St-Maarten scenery upgrade at flightsim.com.
I'm sure you'll like it !

Cool, I'll check it out! By the way, since I saw this post, I've thought of an idea. I wanted to take a Cessna from Florida and go Island-Hopping. Just want to know, has anyone done this before? If you have, I would appreciate any suggestions. What I'm looking for is to hop around in 30 minute flights, go from airport to airport until I eventually get to St. Maarten.

Hi Cramos,

Yeah, that's the reason why I like it so much even I haven't been to there before! I looked at many pictures of it! and I saw some people standing below an Air France B747-200! Just about 50 - 70ft above! I wonder what do the people feel at that moment!?

cxcx300,

Same here, did you notice how the people below never cover their ears? It must be rumbling with 4 engines of a B747-200! In fact on one of the photos I saw, the one with a traffic jam, they said there is a sign that warns people of low flying aircraft and jet blast!

yeah, you're probably thinking of my picture... the main gear bogie was probably no more than 25ft above my head..

Same here, did you notice how the people below never cover their ears?

a couple reasons for that; first of all, on landing the engines are pretty much at idle, so they arent too loud to begin with... second, it moves past you so quickly, it doesnt stay loud very long, you dont really hear it coming towards you because of the way sound travels, its louder behind than in front of the plane...
finally, have you ever gone hunting?? when you target practice, you wear earplugs, the gun is LOUD!! isnt it? of course it is... but when you go hunting, and actually shoot something, you arent wearing earplugs, and you barely will ever notice how loud your gun is... its a rush of adrenaline somewhat.. thats exactly what SXM is like, sound is the last thing your brain is thinking about!!!

great place.

Hello,

Cramos, yeah, I noticed that, too! They were just watching the plane below the 747! When I saw that picture, I suddenly remembered what I had seen before in Kai Tak.. When aircraft was making the famous IGS and flying over the Kowloon City, I heard a very loud sound.. Many people there... were always covered their ears with hands.. and looking at the sky see what plane was it!

Chris, Did you see any go-arounds there in SXM? I think it would be a great thing to see! And we all need to cover our ears?

I would like to visit there too. How long does it take from Paris CDG to there? Thanks!

Best,

Chris28_17,

I must have been thinking about takeoff then when it gets real loud. That's when the engines are at full thrust. I could just imagine the adrenaline that must go through you when you're standing there.

Somewhere it was posted that takeoff at SXM is really cool. Because there is no blast fence, people can stand right in the extended centerline of runway 9 and receive the gift of jet blast, and get knocked on their butts too.
