Today I was emailed by a staff member of an airline (the staff member and the airline will remain nameless). To the email which was sent to me by this staffer, were attached approx 20 emails which had been sent by various collectors from around the world; some of whom are known to me personally.
The reason these emails were sent to me is that this staffer has in the past helped me with bits and pieces and I have helped him/her, and he/she thought that I may like to contact some of these people for myself.
After reading these emails, I was absolutely flabbergasted, to say the very least.
They go from the:
STUPID No. 1: A person writes that they are wanting to book a flight from from ABC to XYZ but they would prefer to look at a hard copy of their timetable as they found their online version very difficult to understand. This person made 2 errors: 1) In their signature line right under their name, is written "Timetable collector" 2) The airline in question doesn't have flights from either ABC or XYZ.
STUPID No. 2: A person writes in an email that they want a safety card sent out to them. The reason they give is that this person's 10 year old son collects them. The email address the person used kinda indicated their age (YAHOO email) and upon checking their Yahoo profile, it says that they are 17 years old. Just when in the evolutionary process did man get the ability not only to produce sperm, but also bear children at the age of seven???
RUDE: A person requests a copy of the airlines timetable. It states in the email that it doesn't matter if it is an old one or a new one (this to me indicates it is a collector). After they have written their request it says "Don't tell me to visit your website."
SELFISH: A person requests some items, which the airline has happily sent out. However, only 4 weeks later, the person sends another email asking for more. I know who this person is, and I know what is done with these extra items....they are put up on Ebay.
OUTRAGEOUS: A person sends an email with a list about 2 pages long of items which they want. About the only thing they didn't demand is the shirt of the airlines' owners back. The amount of stuff this person was demanding would have cost the airline over $20 to send out (and that is a conservatice estimate); yet there was no offer of paying for anything.
This is just 4 examples of what I read in a small number of emails (of which the majority followed the above); and after reading them all, it is now little wonder why the airlines are no longer sending stuff out, even those airlines which were very collector conscious. I just hope that those who read this, and may see some of their handiwork in the above, can do us all a favour and STOP IT!!!
People who act in the above way are ruining it for the serious collector who is not rude or abrasive or demanding. Some advice to those who will still continue acting in the above manner: 1) ASK...DON'T demand. You won't get a damn thing from anyone. Try to imagine that you are the person reading your request. Would you respond to it in a positive way? I think NOT! 2) Offer to pay for postage or whatever. I personally would be more inclined to help someone if they are willing to give someting...not just take take take.
Anyway, that's my rant for the day!!
P.S. The airline concerned WILL NOT send out any items to ANY collectors. Whilst I wasn't told it directly, the way in which this staffer has chatted to me on this issue in the past, I feel that a big reason they don't is because of the attitudes shown as above. Good thing I have become quite friendly with this staffer, and he/she will send me anything I may want or need.
