Airport Mats For Herpa

Sat Feb 09, 2002 6:21 am

I have the Herpa model airport and I want a mat for it to be make it come alive (currently it's on black foam core.). Basically I want the main round airport (maybe 10 or so) with with "pods that go out and on each pod there is the hexagon departure hall. My question is, where could I get some sort of background/mat for this  Confused
Thanks in advance  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I think Herpa have something. Not sure as I don't collect the things  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

If not, you could try a store selling model trains. There are all kinds of backdrops and mats for those, including modular systems.
Basic thing is a green stuff that looks remarkable like a grassy field (in some versions you even get small flowers). You can put roads and stuff onto that. With a bit of luck you can make those look like taxiways and runways (might need a bit of paint to make correct taxiway and runway lines).

Herpa has those kind of mats but I personnally don't like them. If you go to a specialized model train shop you should find what you are looking for, like Jwenting said.

I got the idea when looking to make backdrops for models I built. You can buy those but they are of course limited to what someone else wants, plus very expensive.
I built me an entire battlefield including roads, vegitation, shot out buildings (did buy those) etc.
Looked marvellous at a fraction of the cost a 1.5x1.5 meter pre-build diorama would have been  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

For airport diorama ideas, including a base on which to build, I would recommend paying a visit to www.airlinemuseum.com; from their home page click on "Airport Workshop." Lots of practical ideas, some including pictures, from enthusiasts who have built 1:500 airport dioramas.
