Hints And Tips For FS2002

Sun Mar 10, 2002 10:56 pm

Dear All,

I thought I would start a thread for people that have discovered little things in FS2002 that they would like to share that may help others get more out of this game. These might be things that most people know, or that not many people may know at all.

I have two pearls of wisdom that I would like to share.

1) Real World Weather

If like me you hate flying in perfect clear conditions, but can't be bothered manually changing the weather or don't always log on to the internet when playing FS2002, I have a way to get around this.

Next time you load Real World Weather, create a flight and save it. Whenever you load this flight in future sessions it will load that same database of the Worlds weather. All you have to do is then exit the flight, create a new flight, and you will get the regional weather from when you saved the original flight. It saves logging on to the internet all the time for those of us who don't have a dedicated internet connection. I have about 4 different flights saved. that gives me enough varied world weather to survive for a while.

2) ILS approaches

If you haven't got a list of all the ILS frequencies all over the planet at your disposal, don't worry. When you create a flight and choose "Find Route", it will bring up a map of your flight. In the airport/VOR/intersection list to the right, click on the destination airport.

This brings a close-up of the destination airport on the map, which you can click to get additional information. Highlight the ILS frequencies at the bottom of the information by clicking and dragging the mouse over them, and press "Ctrl-Insert" (windows standard keyboard copy command). This puts the information into your copy buffer.

When you start your flight and you are sitting at the gate/ramp/cargo/active/other runway, bring up the kneeboard (press "F10"). Go to notes and click inside the text area. Press "Shift-Insert" (windows standard keyboard paste command) and you have your ILS frequencies waiting for you to bring up once you have your vectors for the airport.

I hope this helps some, and I hope other, more experienced Sim Pilots can add to the list.

To always have realworld weather, even when not online, download a small program called GetWeather from http://www.bearsoft.de.
It is freeware and sits between FS and the weather servers, acting as a proxy. You can have it download weather (either at request or specifically) and then serve that to FS when FS wants weather.
The data is stored on your computer, so you can always reload an interesting weatherpattern if you want to.

To allow panning in spotplane view, reassign the keys for spotplane view. They are set to fixed positions as default.
I wish I were flying
