Turn Towards Runway

Thu Jun 20, 2002 5:07 am

After establishing the localizer on an ILS landing, the autopilot turns the plane towards the runway. Is this true in real life, or does the pilot have to turn the plane?

Having engaged the approach switch, the plane will turn itself.

In CAT III coupled approach, the airplane will land itself.

Another question while were on the subject is: (Example below)

- When I flew CDG -LHR (737) I took off fine and even flew the correct path, listening to ATC and completing al their requests!!

The stage my problem starts is... "Landmark 1112, You are 84 miles South-East of Heathrow. Turn right heading xxx and proceed on course. Expect vectors for Heathrow runway 27L."

After that...I get completely lost!! I get the Vectors, but then don't know what to do!!!! Do I immediately click the approach switch in auto pilot? If I do that the plane is still flying the same heading advised by ATC, then I loose the vectors and/or my flight plan is cancelled!!

WHAT AM I DOING WRONG??????????????????? PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When the ATC tells you to that, just follow the instruction. At a crtain moment he will ask you to descent. When you about 3000ft above the grond you can turn your NAV1 radio for the localizer assigned by the ATC. Then just do a normal ILS approach.

I hope i helped you,

Do I immediately click the approach switch in auto pilot?

No, ATC will give you headings until you reach the localizer. At one point they will tell you something like "Landmark 1112, you are 20 miles south-east of Heathrow, turn right hdg XXX, descend maintain 2100 until established on the localizer"

When you reach the localizer you can turn on APR or hand fly the ILS.

Yes, this will be a good point to press the approach button on the AP.
