How Many Of You Go Airplane Spotting?

Thu Oct 03, 2002 10:07 am

Those of you that think this is a stupid hobby can ignore this message, I on the other hand think going spotting is one of the best ways to show your love of aviation, not to mention dedication.

If you are a fellow spotter have you :

1) Been spotting in the rain ?
2) Been spotting at night to see something special ?
3) Travelled overseas for spotting ?
4) Taken a flight for the aircraft, no other reason ?

Well I've done all of the above and more. How about you ?. Are you a true aircraft nutter !!

Daryl, I've done 1, 2 and 3. Always wanted to do 4 but couldn't. If Tsentsan is going up to HK in December I might just follow.

1) Yes, of course!

2) Yes I do make an effort to go to the airport to take a look at specials provided I don't have more important things at hand!

3) I met you in HK last year, didn't I?  Smile/happy/getting dizzy Disappointed the Virgin B744 wasn't in the new colours.. and I think we saw a KE B747F left Macau for HK when we were under the approach path of 7L?  Smile

4) Well what I most look forward to when going on a vacation is the flight!

Thanks guy's.

Mr. BA, when you get back to Hong Kong we will go spotting again.

I flew from Haneda to Oshima and back just to get on a YS-11, amazing flight and I'll never forget it.

Two years ago I spent 7 hours in Salt Lake City just to get a DL 722 to Phoenix, could have left 4 hours earlier on a 752  Nuts

1) Yes….but mostly during Kai Tak days. Bad weather means more "action", you know!!
2) Yes….but again, mostly during the old days, when it was so easy to get to Kai Tak, even on weekdays after I left the office.
3) At least once every year. Even if it was a business trip, I'd always end up doing some spotting-related activities.
4) Once so far. Flew a Swissair MD11 going HKG-MNL-HKG early this year just for the heck of it. OK, ok, the end-to-end jumpseat ride is the major attraction, I'd admit.  Big thumbs up

1: Not often as it is difficult keeping the rain off the camera lens
2: Not yet
3: Of course - such a shame Kai-Tak is closed now
4: I remember back in 1976 taking the shuttle from Heathrow to Edinburgh & back just to fly a Trident. I managed a 1C up & a 3B back. The 3B was definitely a spritely aircraft with its four engines at full throttle.

Ive done #4, when I flew a USAirways A330-300 PHL-PIT in Envoy Class and an Airtran 717-200 on the return 2 hours later for the insanely cheap fare of $84 total...amazing experience, one that I sorely would like to repeat, especially with the A330...that $84 I spent was probably the best $84 Ive ever spent...

Ive done #3 incidentally when traveling overseas, like at SYD when I had to connect between terminals the bus ride went straight across the ramp past a ton of widebodies, most of which were new to me...When I go to England I hope to get to either EMA or MAN to spot since they are the two closest airports to where I'll be...

Yes too all 4.

I always take a one day trip to HKG just to visit the airport and spotting. I usually spend my winter vacation in taiwan. So I usually stop at HKG for one day 1st. Typically I would take EVA Air from SFO to TPE, arrive 5:00 in the morning, connect the 1st TPE-HKG flight at 8:00AM. Spent entire day at HKG, and take the last EVA flight of the day back to TPE.

1. Yes, and that's saying something (I'm from California, and we are afraid of the rain).
2. Often, but that's just because I stay there longer than planned.
3. Not specifically for spotting, but that's a selling point. (Especially for changing planes).
4. No, but if I have a choice of fliying on a new plane, airline, or to airport I take it.

Do I go airplane spotting?

Yes, every time I go flying. It's called the "see and avoid." I like to see how many airplanes I can spot, and then avoid them.

Seriously though, I like to do something called "ground-spotting." I love the views I get while flying.

This thread reminds me of something that I've been thinking about lately. When I started flying, I hadn't ever flown before. I started flying because I love airplanes. I keep flying because I love flying - there's a difference. I still love airplanes, but that's not why I keep flying.

Hello!

1) Been spotting in the rain ? -> Sure! Whenever I go and spot, it rains.... what can I say other than I'm always wet???

2) Been spotting at night to see something special ? -> Even when there's nothing special I also go and see... its nice comparing which 747 is lower and louder at the end of the runway....

3) Travelled overseas for spotting ? -> Does travelling to JB from Singapore count?  Smile/happy/getting dizzy Been planning a RTW juz for spotting. Travelled interstate too.... Instead of a direct PER-ADL, I went PER-SYD-MEL-ADL.... and back the same way!!!

4) Taken a flight for the aircraft, no other reason ? -> Yes! Flew to PER-ADL in Virgin Blue's 737-800 and KUL-SIN on a JAL MD-11 just for kicks!!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Hi Daryl and all,

1. Spotting in the rain? You bet, and may have contributed to the demise of some of my earlier cameras . . . but immediately after the rain, you do sometimes get quite dramatic results and skies.

2. Spotting at night for some interesting subjects? When the subject is worth it, definitely. These include ANA's B744 with Pokemon colours and when SIA's Tropical Megatop went on its first test flight - Andrew Hunt and I were at the airport at 5am!

3. Travelled overseas for spotting (and photography) - Kai Tak (the absolute Mecca for photography and spotting) started it all, Japan, Taipei, Beijing, Mongolia and most recently Corfu followed.

4. Taken a plane ride just for that - first time such a madness happened was a trip to Europe with Ceskoslovenske Aerolinie's (CSA) IL-62M, TU-154 and IL-18 . . . the sightseeing was the result of these flights (not the other way around) and also when SIA's first B777-212 (9V-SQA) operated SIA's first B772 commercial flight to Jakarta - there and back on the same day.

It was interesting to read of the same "madness" or "passion" that so many of your cared to post above . . . keep them coming. Great thread, Daryl.

This has gone better then I expected.

I've not have not been arrested but a person I was spotting with in Manila was taken away by the military with more M-16's then I've ever seen. He was released about 5 hours later.

Well....

I have driven out to YVR at 100AM to see CX889 come down from JFK!!

I have definitely chosen one flight over another for the aircraft... for example - an Air Transat L1011 Tristar over Canada 3000's B757 of course!!! I have tried so hard to arrange myself on an MD11 or a DC10 but to no avail yet!!!

And of course spotting planes in other countries are the best!! Especially when you are at a big airline's major hub!! NW and KL at Amsterdam is truly the best!!!

I am an aricraft nutter

1) Been spotting in the rain ?

Look at this picture, Frederic (Sabena 690) took it on an a.net meeting at BRU. We were waiting for one hour in the rain at a cemetery next to the airport just to see this SV MD-11, and as you see it was it worth!!!

3) I do it for a living!!!
4) Well, I've gone flying in little stuff for no other reason. Does doing a turnaround flight count? I fly to places like Taipei or Bangkok and back and never leave the aircraft.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

1- Yes. I was in ATL (at the Renaissance, does that count?) and it rained the whole day. Pretty heavy at times. Also, when we're in SJU, I like to go to the roof of the condo tower & watch them. Once, we did it with lightning all around us. We stayed in the rain after it started a few minutes & went in.

2-Yes. Back to SJU- we'd go out after dark (usual dep. time) & stand in our spot to watch the Iberia 747 or A340 take off.

3-No.

4- No. Wanted to, though!

I try to go regular to Schiphol airport, but as it is little far away (2 hours by train), I am not doing it too often...

I have done 1, 2, and 3 and I love spotting all the time even it is night or raining...
