Telescopic Aerials

Mon Feb 03, 2003 3:02 am

 Smile Hi everyone!  Smile

I currently have the Maycom AR-108. It's pretty good for what I need it for, and it has a rubber duck aerial.
I've seen telescopic aerials for as low as £6.99, and as high as £39.99.
Would buying a telescopic aerial improve the quality of reception, (or even pick up transmissions further away from my house?)

I live approx 15 miles from EMA. I can hear the approach, but the Tower is very very weak, and transmissions are impossible to understand.

Would a telescopic aerial improve this?

Thanks for your replies!

The antennae that come with many scanners are not optimal.

A longer antenna or a different impedance antenna might indeed pick up fainter signals.
I'd go to a specialty store and get some decent advice. They'll know what antenna are good for your receiver.

Did it work? - I found that a simple cheap telescopic was marginally better than a rubber duck (until you poke it into an eye by mistake!)

I'm going this Saturday - I was too interested in NASA last Saturday.

That's why I told him to get expert advise Nfield.
Which antenna is best depends as much on the radio itself as it does on what you want to do with it.
Maybe you just got the wrong antenna for your receiver.

Yes, different freq's requires different length of the antenna.

And I didn't get a chance to go today either. Maybe I'll get some time to go over the half term break week.
