Anyone Have Other Kai Tak Videos?

Fri May 16, 2003 7:41 pm

I have JustPlanes' video "Kai Tak, the Last Day"... and love it!  Love

Does anyone have any other videos featuring Kai Tak? Didnt JustPlanes actually have a series? I'm very interested in attaining such videos, so if anyone has advice or can help... please email, IM, or leave a message for me here. Thanks!

I have Kai Tak Part 2 (I think) Its the purple box. It is 90% from the observation area there, with loads of landings, and take offs from behinde the plane. It is cool, but I LOVE take offs, and there are only 2 take offs from a head of the plane (a 747SP KAL and a 742 Evergreen) Both awesome.

I know Just Planes stop selling them  Pissed I would guess some Airplane Hobby shops would sell them. There are a ton of them listed in the back of Airways magazine if that helps any. If you do find a shop that sells them, let me know I am interested in acquiring a NRT video.

Got the "Last Day at Kai Tak" video, though the quiality os a bit so-so. I like the shots from the departures hall, though. A shame that the landing was on rwy 31 instead of 13 - does anyone know/care to guess where the flight was coming from?

I also have the "Last Look at Kai Tak '98" which is way better in quality, and the sheet with registrations etc. is nice to have. A bit annoying that the landing on the VS A340 was from 2 different aircrafts. I felt that it kind of ruined the whole point.

"Goodbye Kai Tak" video is offered by Air Utopia at www.airutopia.com if you want more action.

I have it - bought it in HK - the angles are great - from the deck - famous window seat approach - opposite side views from several locations AND views from the checkerboard.

this video is excellent by the way... i think i have placed a post before about this subject... or it may have been about the St. Maarten video they have (I have only 3 of their videos commercially - but like all 3)

Good luck.

That landing is from a Cathay 747-400 arriving from FRA.
Very disappointed that rwy 31 was in use....  Angry

Okay, I guess that particular flight arrived as one of the first on the day, which was why 31 was used.

Hey ConcordeBoy,

if you go over to www.A340.net there is one clip from the cockpit. It is really cool to watch.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Anyways, I believe that justplanes.com should have more videos.

Here, kids of airport action, is your key to Kai Tak video products. I like all of these, with a special fondness towards Just Planes products (and Avion's as well).

Just Planes is selling only DVDs now (direct from its website that is).

These sites DO have some VHS airport titles (no Kai Tak though), some for big fat discounts (no doubt they're trying to get all the VHS stuff off the shelves). ..........

http://www.airplaneshop.com

http://www.airlinersonline.com

I did find several on-line sources that DO still have some Kai Tak programs for sale. Better get 'em before they're discontinued! .........

http://www.aviation-worldwide.com/products/videos_airport.html

http://airutopia.com/index2.html

http://www.avionvideo.com/

Just Planes has (had) 5 total Kai Tak programs: International Numbers 2, 14, 15, and 29. Plus, the "Final Day" video. I can't find anyplace selling any of these at the present time, however.  Sad

You might try the link below as well. "Flying Pig Videos" has a pretty nice 2-part Kai Tak, which features ATC on the tapes too. Colors are a bit muted, but still, it's Kai Tak, so it can't be TOO bad!  Smile .......

http://airportworld.com/videos.htm

Good Luck!
Let us know if you're successful in finding some!
And if anybody out there knows of any other Kai Tak programs (or other airport videos in general), please post them here. Thanks.

Has anybody ever purchased any products (few though they might be in selection) from this outfit? ............

http://airliners-interactive.com/

I did get 1 item from them many moons ago, but had to return it because it refused to play. (It wasn't a DVD, but a DVD-ROM only, even though they claim it would play in free-standing DVD Players.)  Sad

Just wondered if anybody else had the same difficulty with this organization?

Greetings everyone...

GREAT JOB LAX!! Those covers look Good.

AA727.... Let me know what you think? I personally liked it because of the captions and history and brief narration which came with it. I like to learn a little - and not only watch.

Several of my buddies also liked "Goodbye Kai Tak" as well - the only thing we felt was we wished it was longer - so perhaps a good criticism.

Several things to note in the Airutopia.com 'Goodbye Kai Tak' video:

2 planes aborting (EVA and a Vietnam)
Continental Micronesia 747
Checkerboard view is EXCELLENT with ATC!
Some night shots including a Thai 747-2 Cargo briefly (never seen that before)

Pay attention to ATC warning departing planes of incoming ship in the harbor (very unique)... ship is seen later.
Pay attention to NW plane and chinese workers mowing the grass - is this allowed... the pilots must of thought this was crazy!?!

I have seen Avion and Harry's also - good also.

Airports of the world I thought was sloppy - but that is only my opinion.

JP is good also - except the "Last Day" was a bit soso due to the constant shaking.

peace-

I have that "Wings Over HK" VHS, Soundtrack. Been a while since I watched it though. But, as I recall, I liked it.

BTW, its complete title is ... "A TRIBUTE TO KAI TAK -- WINGS OVER HONG KONG -- AN AVIATION HISTORY - 1891-1998".

(The video is approximately 60 minutes in length.)

AA727 - I was laughing also... that is IMPOSSIBLE or a NO NO at any airport - people mowing lawns at the takeoff point of a runway. What the #$#%! And they were chilling out - if you note carefully, some of those Chinese (with the famous hats) were sort of relaxing like it's an everyday thing. It had to be a mistake - bc i am sure normally they will do this during off hours - not during peak time of takeoffs. The NW pilots must have really thought that this was crazy - and I almost noticed the NW plane taking off on the right of the center hashmark to maybe avoid the mowers?? Take a look!

I used to work at an airport - and was yelled out years ago when I got within 50 yds of a turbofan on (foreman didn't want me being sucked into the engines!). Needless to say - this is classic - they mention also in ATC by the way if you listen.

That reminds of something else - they have a St. Maarten video which is also very good - in this video - you will hear ATC saying "We have a caution - there are some DOGS on the runway threshold..." Next shot are dogs being chased off the runway by airport authority - also hilarious.

AAheavy...
What do you mean by Kai Tak with Takeoffs? Plse rephrase clearer. All these videos listed above have landings and takeoffs - I think the only one I recall that has a takeoff from inside the plane window seat view departing HK is the 'Goodbye Kai Tak' video which we have been discussing.

I think ITVV - Intelligent video has an actual Kai Tak takeoff from the cockpit - but have forgotten.

Peace everyone!

AA61hvy.....

I've just checked my Harry's programs. And have discovered 1 "Harry's Pilot's Point-Of-View" video (Volume #1) that has 1 Kai Tak Runway 13 take-off sequence on it (with a fixed camera mount). It's a fairly lengthy sequence too (over 12 minutes). That same Vol. 1 also has a Runway 13 Landing chapter. Both take-off and landing are from fixed cameras aboard a Boeing 747-400 (Lufthansa probably).

Also: Harry's "Pilot's POV" Volume 2 has 1 Kai Tak Landing on it. (On B744). Good luck in finding anyplace that has these for sale, however. I can find zero. But, maybe some European places still have them.

And: Harry's has an "Aviation Special" VHS video called "Hong Kong--Checkerboard Approach" that features a landing on Runway 13 (from a NON-fixed camera in the cockpit of a 744). The only on-line location I think you can still buy this is .... http://aviation-worldwide.com/products/0360.html .

Hope this info proves helpful to you.  Smile

About Harry's,

I've been told they have good airport videos... but, their cockpit productions from those watching it don't capture the effects well during landings and are robotic.

I HAVE NOT WATCHED THEM... three of my friends who did watch it told me they did not like them (unanimous) to my surprise! They mentioned this:

1. stationary camera - does not capture the feel of the runway approaching.
2. Boring - not enough panning or dialogue.

But, again - I have not watched them. Their airport video in general were better then JP. But Harry's has seemed to have stopped producing - there has not been a releast in 4 yrs? (anyone out there know)

Hi SOUNDTRACK........

Yes, some of the "Harry's" programs are kind of "robotic", indeed. (With stationary/fixed camera mounting.) This type I mentioned in my post (above), they're the "Pilot's POV" programs (with the fixed camera out the cockpit window; no panning at all). But, hey, at least it's steady, with no "jumps" and jerks upon landing!  Smile

The Harry's "Cockpit Flight" videos are NOT fixed cameras. They have some panning around on those.

The boredom factor will vary from person to person. (But, Hey, let's face it. There just ARE NOT 175 different ways to show planes landing and taking off! Even from the cockpit! Once you've seen about 5 or 6 of these (with varying differences), you've pretty much run the gamut of the possibilities.) -- Until that day comes when the Boston, Massachusetts, producer of "Just Planes Videos, Inc." (who, btw, is a great guy!) decides to put a cameraman on the outside of that American Trans Air Boeing 757-300 and shoot some spectacular "wing-walking" aerial footage as it lands at LAS in Las Vegas (at night)! I've been trying to talk him into this kind of footage. But, for some reason, he just REFUSES to risk the lives of just a couple of photographers in order to provide we video junkies with something different! Heck!  Smile Smile (LOL!)

Anyway....  Smile ... I agree that the Harry's airport videos are really quite nice, as you eluded to above, S'Track. The editing is top-notch, because they nearly always utilize the preferred (by me anyway) "fade-in, fade-out" type of editing for each shot. As opposed to the quick cut-offs.

However, it'd be hard to beat the newer Just Planes Airport programs on DVD! The Digital DVD programs are great IMO. Esp. LAX and LHR, which feature nice LOUD stereo sound for window-rattling airport excitement if you've got a decent sound system! Very nice! (Crank it up and you'll think you're on the apron @ LHR!)

Which videos/DVDs do you currently have, Soundtrack?

Another VHS I'd get (if you can find it in some lost corner of the Earth) is: Just Planes' Special "Airbus Vol. 1" (there will be no #2 I'm told). But Vol. 1 has great sound & shows Toulouse "touch-&-go" footage for many Airbus widebodies on test flights. A nice video.

More info for Soundtrack......

(Sorry, forgot this previously)......

Harry's DOES have 4 fairly-new programs (put out in very early 2002).
Those are:
> LUXEMBURG 2001 AIRPORT VIDEO
> DUSSELDORF 2001 AIRPORT VIDEO
> FRANKFURT 2001 AIRPORT VIDEO
> PILOT'S POINT OF VIEW VOLUME 9

All of these will never (evidently) be available in the USA format of NTSC. They are PAL only!

Well done LAX...

How in the heck did you find those new Harry's productions?? - I have buddies everywhere and we have never seen or heard of Luxemburg! Wonder why they don't do well advertising outside Germany?!?

"at least it's steady, with no "jumps" and jerks upon landing!"
-I AGREE - Harry's is always steady - good point.

Thanks for the clarification about Harry's cockpit Flight "not" having fixed cameras - I was confused with Pilots Point of View.

"The boredom factor will vary from person to person" - GREAT POINT, everyone has different tastes - but share the common interest of liking to watch aviation.

And from all of us who have bought from JP - he is a really great guy... between me and about 7 of us - we have most of the JP productions and will share them since it's rather expensive having them all.

But I can tell you that everyone I know -my friends in HK, UK, Brazil, Australia all have unanimously agreed that the Airutopia productions are fantastic! I have yet to meet someone who has not liked their productions... as witnessed by AA727 above who also just bought it. I just purchased the remaining 8 titles they have (they only have 11) and this company is a dark horse i believe. But they are not well known.

My UK friend recently told me that Airliner World (Key publishing) is the 'Exclusive distributor' for them... and Airliner world only gets high quality productions. I decided to do a quick search to see where you can buy this series since it's not easy to find (used Google)...

obviously www.airutopia.com (US)
www.aviation-worldwide.com (australia nz)
www.keypublishing.com (UK)
www.airplanesuperstore.com (US) ...(only company which carries their DVD on website)

i don't know anywhere else...

One last note - my buddy in HK has their HK CLK DVD - he says it's excellent - with subtitles for ATC and narration. I only have the videos now - but may have to get the DVD soon.

LAX- i believe this company is a dark horse - i have yet to hear anything negative about airutopia - especially the newest productions - these productions are sort of like Discovery meets Just Planes!

Anyone out there who has seen this add your input - i am curious.

LAX - how do you get those box covers up? I couldnt find a way to do that.

Concordeboy - great subject!

Peace

Hi again.......

The Harry's covers I got from aviation-worldwide.com (the only place I know of that has these....in PAL only remember).

Yes...I like the Utopia stuff as well. Their website has been re-done, and more DVDs supposedly coming. Along with a "Travel" type series (kinda like "The Travel Channel" stuff I would presume). I have no real interest in that type of program though.

But, I like Utopia's two HK videos. Utopia had the Kai Tak footage in mothballs, evidently, for about 5 or 6 years before releasing that video in 2001 or early 2002!  Smile

FYI ..... It's 'possible', but by no means certain, that the Just Planes Producer (Mr. M.  Smile) just might put out a "Best Of Kai Tak" DVD at some point in the future. I've tried to encourage this via e-mail. And he agreed that it'd be a good idea. So...perhaps a nice 3 to 4-hour JP Kai Tak Highlights DVD will be released some day. I hope so. I'd get it for sure!

I have the Airutopia "Airplanes in Action Series" series of 11 videos ranging from St. Maarten, Washington National to Hong Kong Kai Tak to F14 cockpit!
From my opinion… they are a MUST buy for any airplane/airport enthusiast…. Just planes has excellent choice & Airutopia has excellent productions. As AA727 and Soundtrack said above - Kai Tak production is the best!

Very interesting comments... thank you - we are really nothing without your support - so we are humbled by any constructive comments.

By the way, I agree with you all... the head of JP is a "great" guy. He has done an very good job in creating his fleet of productions.

Question you can all help me with:

What would you like to see in future productions or airports or airlines?
If you have opinions of how the current productions on vhs can improve - let me know.

Have a nice day - thanks for your support!

Hello David Maxwell.......

Hadn't realized you were an A.Net member! Good to talk to you.

(I'm David; I've talked with you several times by e-mail, as you had asked me to review some of your fine videos.)  Smile

Above, you asked for suggestions for future projects. .... I, and no doubt everyone on this website, realize that in this post-9/11 environment of "get away from this area" and "No! You can't photograph planes here anymore!" that your company must undoubtedly be facing daily must make it very difficult to come up with new products for the masses. (I'm still amazed that Mr. Moskal at Just Planes can put out 2 to 3 programs per month still, even in these times of ultra-tight airport/airline security! It's quite remarkable we're seeing ANYTHING new.)

But, David M., hopefully these restrictions on you will be eased in months to comes. .... I, for one, would love to see one of my "hometown" airlines featured in an aviation video/DVD: ATA-American Trans Air! Some flights in & out of Las Vegas (LAS) at night (and day) would be quite exceptional to film from the cockpit or passenger cabin! Plus: they've got an interesting fleet of practically brand-new aircraft now, with their Boeing 757-300s, B752s, and B737-800s. Anyway, just a thought. I think ATA might be a nice airline to film.

As far as airport DVDs/Videos ..... I really like Just Planes' recent trend of COMBINING more than one aerodrome onto one program. (i.e.: J.P.'s "Heathrow & Manchester" DVD, or 4 different airports within China on one single disc.) I think this spices up things, so that we get to see a wider variety of fields, angles, and airlines involved, all on the very same disc (or VHS).

An airport suggestion I have regarding a possible future USA Airport video I'd enjoy owning: How about a "Middle West U.S.A." volume, showing many of the somewhat smaller (but still International) airports in the "Breadbasket" states of America: such as Lambert in St. Louis, along with perhaps Kansas City, Indianapolis, CVG in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Des Moines, Omaha, and Louisville (to name a few).

Thanks David M. for your Utopia productions. And I'll be watching for future releases for sure.

David VP,

What's up! Of course I am an airliners.net fan - who is not!

Very good ideas - yes, getting to airports freelancing is much more difficult in the post 911 environment - but permission is still possible as long as the timing is right. And we must never quit - you as a fan going to an airport - and us as videomakers.

The reason the 'breadbasket' airports have not been done is marketability - I think in general, unless an airport is a major or has int'l significance - the video won't sell in great amounts unless you have a base of subscribers (such as JP has).

You asked why JP can make 2-3 productions - it is because many are not US based - but most important - this smart guy Michel has been able to reach or beat a break-even point allowing him to make any production (well, almost any) and still make money based on his fanbase. A fanbase gained from years of service.

I like your breadbasket idea - and WON'T forget it. I too like the breadbasket airports as well - but have had to focus on other important areas first. Actually, I have always enjoyed the unheard of airports - that is where I grew up and first enjoyed watching aviation. But when you are trying to sell a Louisville to store in France or in Asia - they have no idea what that is.

I will be back... go to go to a meeting..

David M asked you to email him directly (dmaxwell@airutopia.com) if you have more suggestions... he won't have a chance to answer you in next several weeks if you post any more messages from his response on A.net (he's actually over the Pacific now on the way back to HK to work on more HK Kai Tak video footage). He just dictated this last response message an hour via phone from LAX (yes - no pun intended!) after I mentioned your constructive comment! I have also been a big collector of his programs and actually talk to him every couple of months.

But I also have many others as well as I have written earlier - JP is great - Harry's are good - etc...

By the way, one of JP's best is Madeira (older VHS from 1996 I think) in the Atlantic before the runway extension! Do you have this one?

Peace -
Doug

Thanks, Doug, for the messages.

Yes...I have the Funchal video. Plus the "Windy" Wellington tape; which makes for some interesting approaches & landings. (I'd like a follow-up DVD on Wellington some day.)

I'm curious about the following airport-style videos (which evidently cannot be purchased currently)....but am wondering if any of you guys have any of these or have heard about them?

They're called "The Spotters' Club Airport Videos".

From a pretty-much-buried and hard-to-find aviation link I unearthed, these videos provide, quote, .... "The most action-packed airport videos today, with over 150 takeoffs and landings per video."

LAX (aka air video archelogist)

No, never heard of it... do you have a link or pic of this?? What year? Name? Perhaps if you know the name Dave Maxwell/AirUtopia may know who it was. He knows most of the people out there.

He told me that several individuals back about 10 yrs ago starting making videos- but soon stopped - they went to enthusiast conventions I believe.

Yes - what happend to IAPV?
