Joystick Recommendations For Msfs?

Sun Jun 15, 2003 7:30 am

Hey, I just snagged a Microsoft Sidewinder joystick from Staples for $30. I know this is probably too pricey, so I'm curious if any of you have advice on a good joystick for Microsoft Flight Simulator. Can I get a good joystick for less? If so I'll return this one. Similarly... should I go for a force feedback joystick? Any advice on using MSFS with joysticks would be appreciated. Thanks!

No FFB, it's not worth the money. Feel is too obviously fake, and they're far more prone to failure (and without FFB working they're way too loose).

If you're serious about FS get a CH Yoke, which costs $150-$200. A really good stick will cost about the same.
Best sticks on the market are Thrustmaster.

When I used to fly, I always used my Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2. I think its great. True, without the FFB engaged, the controls are very loose, but usually you buy a stick with FFB to use the FFB. This one cost me 100 CAD, but was a very good buy. Having tried the CH Yoke, I can say it too is very good, however lacks FFB. Other than that, very realistic.

It seems like you are on a tight budget so Id stay away from FFB...those can cost 30-40 dollars more than the non-FFB version of any given stick, plus as already pointed out by jwenting, its not really all that great...to me, a good asset in a stick is having many additional buttons on it so that I can program them so that I almost never have to use the keyboard or mouse while FSing...

Another thing that I have for FS, is the Microsoft Voice. You say a word into the mic., and the corresponding controls are activated. It is very realistic, as it seems as if you have a first officer there to lower or raise the landing gear when you tell him/her to. There are many other controls that you can also program into it, quite easily. One important thing is that you don't mumble, otherwise it will not recognize the word.

I've always been put off those voice-activated things because I bought a Voicepad program a couple of years ago, where you just speak and it writes it for you on the screen, but it never worked properly.
