Your Crazy Challenges In FS!

Mon Jun 30, 2003 2:43 am

What are some of the crazy challanges that you have accomplished in FS? Last night, I did my first super hard challenge. I know a lot will talk about flying into that mountain in Peru! Well anywho, last night I downloaded a Mesaba BAe 146-200. I set weather to thunderstorms, wind, and 1/8 mi visibility. I could barely see anything! I taxiied to the runway at MSP, and I noticed that aircraft were departing and arriving like crazy (I think the airport in real life would be closed in a situation like this). So I got in line with about 4 NW 757s, World Travel 747, Pacifica 777, Airwave Dash-8, and 3 NW A320s. I was on the taxiway, and I could barely see the aircraft on the runway, the condition were that bad. After a while, it was my turn. I had a great takeoff, and flew downwind, base, then final. I joined the localizer along with a USAirways A319 and a Continental 737. The USAirways A319 landed and exited. It was my turn. I came in fine, and then got hit by severe winds. I was about 100 feet above the runway and I still could not see the runway. Finally it came in to sight, and I was a little high, fast, and off. So I reported a missed approach, and went around. Meanwhile, the Continental 737 landed fine.  Yeah sure So I took another downwind, base, then final again. This time I joined with a Pacifica 777, and an American MD80. Pacifica 777 landed, and exited. Finally it was my turn. I was crabbing to fight the winds, I was getting closer and closer, then I saw the runway. I was centerline, I touched down nicely, and slowed down on 12L. I exited, and I saw the American MD80 slow down on the runway. I thought it was sweet to totally depend on the instruments, and not look out the window for basically the entire time! I'm going to try another one of these soon! Anyone else have a crazy challenge that you'd like to share! It'd be cool to read them!

I like to fly approaches with low visibility. Sometimes on one engine too.  Smile
Thats all I do now.

Lately I've been doing the Kai Tak checkerboard approach with a 747.

I'm always shooting instrument approaches to minimums without autopilot...and creating holds for myself. Those are the few truly serious applications of FS. The rest of it is just fun. I'm also perfecting my hammerhead stall. Oh, it's also fun to work up an old school flight plan form, set winds, and see how close you can get.

I remember doing Kai Tak with a 747 and landing it.... I thought I could conquer the world after that.

Continental here is a challenge: do the same thing but on the aircraft carrier outside SFO (same conditions  Wink/being sarcastic)

Last night I flew from Juneau (PAJN) to Hoonah (PAOH, I think... fly direct the SSR VOR (114.0) and then take the 200* radial off of the VOR for about 10nm.) in the default Cessna 172 with a low overcast, three miles visibility and easterly winds gusting to 60 kts... also no GPS. It almost made me airsick.  Nuts

I can't fly to Kai Tak there is no scenery  Sad. I haven't done any mad stunts yet...I might try now though.

Just today i was crusing in an Northwest A320 from Juneau to Seattle on charter. But i lost all verticle control. Landed the plane in Houston Canada. 3500ft runway. With no vertical control except for way up and a little down.

Done many other things landed pipers in hurricanes. I allways find my self on short runway landings and stuff. But what happen today was one of the few emergencys i did not create. I had a friend co-pilot that day and that was alot of help.

Hi,

If you want to land on an aircraft carrier, there is one just south of Maui in Hawaii. Using the FS Navigator the carrier has ILS approach on the north inbound arrival.

Thanks,

Today I flew a couple of circuits at BHX in a Cessna 182, weather was pretty bad, vis was down to around 800m with overcast skies and medium level winds. Thank god for the ILS on runway 15 Big grin

I got a NW 744 (fully loaded) off at Meigs with the fastest wind in FS98, I think I used like a little less than a 1000 feet.
