FS2004 Is Really Disappointing

Wed Jul 30, 2003 3:33 am

I have been looking foward to this for a long time and today I went out and bought it and all I have to say is that I'm really disappointed with it. Yes, the ATC and weather imporvements are great but it's choppy as hell. By choppy I mean I'm only getting like 8-10 fps even in clear weather. I'm doubling my ram soon but i don't even know how much that will help. Here are my computer's specifications:

HP 7935 Pavilion
1.3 Mhz Athlon processor
256mb of Ram
40 gb hard drive with 15 free
64 mb Gefore 2 card
etc etc

Anyone know what I can do to improve in addition to more ram and maybe a new video card?

Mine's a little choppy too. I think beefing up your RAM should help. Also I had to tweak the visual settings a bit.

Mine's also a little choppy even on a 1,53 GHz processor with medium settings, but it's not that bad and I can live with it.

Definately beef up the RAM, but the 1.3Ghz is towards the lower end of the stick nowadays.

You nutz!?!?! I have a 1 ghz which I fly on. It was only OK, some choppiness with 128 mb of ram! I upgraded to 384 for $15, and it is SMOOOOOTHH, I was flying in the Carribean, I had the LOCK FPS at 40, and it stayed at 40 the entire time! I have to slide the slider up next time! It's definetely the RAM.

You can't expect to get the same performance with everything turned on you did on FS2002...

Most people are reporting BETTER performance with the same level of detail...

But then your machine is seriously out of date.
Add another 512MB RAM and add a geForce 4Ti card (NOT an MX).
FS9 uses DirectX 8 and 9 commands for optimal performance and those aren't supported by your old GF2 card so they have to be emulated in software which is slower.

Thats exactly what I will be doing. Now I have 256MB RAM and Im going to get it up to 512MB RAM. Now I have a GeForce2 MX 400 graphic card and I will be getting a new one (not sure which one though)

Right now with FS2004 Im getting FPS around the low to mid teens.

How often are you people buying computers???? Last August, before I started school I purchased a 1.13 gHz Sony VAIO laptop. It's only a year old--I would hardly call my machine "seriously out of date." ----- But anyway, I'm getting the same performance I did out of FS2002, great on the ground and in the air...crappy in clouds.. REALLY crappy in heavy clouds..

How will my comp perform with FS2004? Specs will be:

P4, 2.4 ghz @ 400mhz
512mb RAM
GeForce Ti4200, 128mb ram
Windows 2000

Is there a better, comparably-priced video card than the Ti4200 for FS2004? Maybe ATI?

Thanks

The ATi Radeon series.

I have a GeForce TI4600 though, never used the Radeon, but the reviews put ATi and Nvidia as head to head competitors with ATi slightly heading.

At least you guys can get it to run; every time I try to run it, my screen turns black and displays a red rectangle saying "out of range". My computer is not even 4 months old, so it more than meets the minimum system requirements. I've tried adjusting the monitor settings to no avail, and I've ran diagnostics, and it says everything is running right. Tech support for my computer leaves at lot to be desired (I tried online tech support and got fed up after 10 minutes of waiting for an answer), and Microsoft hasn't got any tech support stuff up for MSFS2004 yet, and I've even downloaded the newest video drivers to.

Srbmod, sounds like you're trying to run it with a too high screen resolution, try deleting the FS2004.cfg file and trying again.

I actually got it to work by starting it up in safe mode; I closed it several times, restarted it not only through the program folder, I also was able to get it to load off of the desktop icon.

It seems like my choppyness problems are solved. I tweaked things a little bit, and started running it on the resolution that my graphics card was supporting.... Man it looks sweet.

Well I'm going to BestBuy this week to buy another 256 megabytes of ram which will total me to 512mb. Hopefully it will be smooth then. I can't really afford a new video card. I'm only 15 for cryin out loud! Even if I could afford it, I don't know how great the card would perform because for some STUPID reason, HP built my computer with no AGP slot. So any add-on video cards have to be PCI only. That's what my Geforce 2 is.

nono, ADD 512MB. Don't go TO 512MB!

For videocards, the geForce 4Ti4200 and 4600 are the best cards out there.
ATI is according to some a bit faster but you'd need their 9700 line which is quite expensive, and the geForce FX cards are better than that.
ATI also is well known for driver problems and in fact people using their cards are currently struggling because several rendering options that are new in DirectX 9 are not properly implemented leaving them with badlooking FS.

Your machine most likely DOES have an AGP slot, but you don't see it.
It's used by the integrated card on your motherboard (which you apparently already shut down  Smile).

I update my computer several times a year with some new components.
About every 3 years it gets completely replaced but by that time the only things still in it from the original one are the motherboard, harddisks, CD drive and part of the RAM (and those harddisks and CD usually get reused in the new machine).

Ok.... I just went and bought another 256mb of ram and expanded my computer to 512mb of ram. But guess what.... IT'S STILL CHOPPY!!! So after seeing that the framerates were still low, I went back to best buy and spent $128 dollars on a new video card. Here my current updated specs of my computer.

HP 7935 Pavilion
1.3 Ghz Athlon processor
512mb of Ram
40 gb hard drive with 15 free
128 mb Gefore FX 5200 PCI card
etc etc

But guess what, I installed it and took off in a 737 at MCO with fair weather and it's still only getting 10-14 fps. WHAT IS UP???? I've spent about $300 dollars on this DAMN simulator now and it's still not up to my standards that I had with FS2002. On 2002 I had at least 25 fps. What is wrong???

Any comment is appreciated. Thanks!

-Justin

ok well, im gonna guess its something else stealing clock cycles, either a memory resident program or a nasty code (virus/trojan/worm). Check your system tray and task manager before you load FS, try shutting down anti-virus software and compression utilities, especailly shut down things like the WinAmp and RealOne players in the taskbar or IM programs like MSN or AOL IM.

Also FS2004 WILL take more resources with all the sliders maxed out, especailly check hardware lights in the display hardware settings, setting this high will seriously degrade performance even for people with 3.2ghz/GFFX5900Ultra/2GB of RAM systems, i run with 3, never any more than that. Also try bilinear filtering instead of trilinear (with the 5200 there wont be much visual difference anyways). Make sure you also have the newest WHQL approved Detonators for your card (44.53 i think it is now?)

Im running an Athlon XP1800+ with a Radeon 9600Pro, 512MB PC2100 DDR and well lets just say lots of HD space, and i dont get much over 20FPS anywhere on the ground, but it is SMOOTH, not choppy, even under 10FPS its very smooth considering and im SURE its my CPU thats the bottleneck now, just running 3DMark 2001 and 2003 tells me that much.

The reason that you are getting a crap framerate is because the components in your computer are not that great... The geforce fx 5200 is one of the slowest graphics chipsets on the market, slower then a geforce 3 ti 500. What you need is more ram, you got that covered, and decent GPU, ie: radeon 9500pro, 9700pro, 9800pro, geforce 5600,5900. To the poster that said get the ti4200... dude... the radeon is much faster, the 9700pro is close to twice the speed of the geforce 4 series and the geforce slows to a crawl with fsaa. The new cats are just as stable as the dets btw.

My system:

Athlon 2400+
512 pc 2700 DDR
Radeon 9700pro

Flight sim runs at about 40 fps with almost all eye candy and fsaa turned on.

Thanks for the warning. I'm having a similar experience with FS2004 but after hearing your story, I'm not dropping bucks on new video or RAM until I know it will make a big difference. Keep us posted on your quest for better FPS.

Buying the lowest end of a new card line is never a good idea, because they are usually worse then high/mid end cards from the previous generation. If I was you I'd take that FX5200 back.

Ok! Here is an update! After posting yesterday on here, I tried my simulator again and I was having the worst time with the new video card. Every time I would go into my aircraft or weather menu, etc, etc, while I was flying, the damn thing would turn into a million different colored dots! I freaked out. I called PNY tech. and then had NO IDEA what to do! They suggested downloading the new driver. I did that and nothing changed so I called Bestbuy and they said all I could do was exchange it for the same one. SHIT!!! So today I went back to bestbuy and exchanged it and brought it home. I installed it and tried it and I was SOOOO HAPPY! It wasn't doing it anymore. AND.... after I tweaked my display settings, I was getting 15-30 fps!!!!! I WAS IN HEAVEN!! Until I took a flight from MCO-JAX and found out it was doing the color thing again! FUCK!!! (excuse my language). So I called Microsoft this time and they said to try changing my resolution on the game or try just running FS2004 in "Window Mode" (opposite of Full-screen mode). So I tried the resolution but no luck. Then I tried the "Window mode" and it was ALL GOOD!!!  Smile It works now and this story is finally concluded. Maybe the FX5200 isn't the best card but it's all that I can afford right now. So now I am a happy man with 15-35 fps on FS2004!!! THANKS FOR EVERYONE'S INPUT! Have a great day!
