Fs2002 Aircraft Painting

i wanted to paint the 737-400 that came with fs2002. i tried opening the file in many different photo editing programs but coulnd't. are these files protected in some way that i can't repaint them? what do i need to do to repaint them?

I have the same problem. I unfortunately dont know how to repaint them. However you can do it with the learjet, but that is not a 737-400. Sorry for no help.

1st FS textures will be in one of the following formats, all bitmaps (bmp):

DXT1, DXT3, 32Bit or 16Bit (various settings for 16)

To edit them you need either

A> Imagetool (comes with FS2002 Professional or you can download it)

or B> DXTbmp available on the better FS sites (AVSIM,, etc)

You need to convert the textures into something your graphics program can open, either 32bit, 24bit or if you have no other option 8bit.

Paint shop pro and Paint cannot do 32Bit graphics (PSP will open 32Bit bitmaps but will ignore the Alpha layer), they need 24Bit. Photoshop will open 32bit. the gIMP depends on the version you are using, the newr ones will open 32Bit, older only does 24Bit.

The Alpha channel is what handles the reflective effects for Fs2002/2004, you CAN get away with not using it, just save your work in 24Bit and convert it to DXT1 when you're done.
