Planes Veer Off To The Left

Mon Feb 16, 2004 12:12 pm

All of a sudden when playing FS2K2 my planes started to veer off to the left. I couldn't successfully calibrate my joystick; therefore I thought it was something internal and I broke it apart. That joystick was a sidewinder (Microsoft). Later I got a WingMan, Force feedback. When I installed this one, planes kept veering off, so I realized it wasn't my previous joystick. Some how I managed to calibrate this one that work fine for a while. However, one day, all of a sudden something is making the planes to veer off to the left. I have calibrated the stupid joystick thousands of times, but I haven't been able to solve the problem successfully.

Because this issue has happened with two different joystick, and out of the blue (I've never dropped the joystick or anything like that) I think it could be a virus (maybe a plane I downloaded), a setting I haven't looked at.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated because my simulator has become annoying.

P.S. I've tried trimming and doesn't help any.

That makes two of us. It's not the engine torque, as the realism settings have no effect on this. It doesn't happen as much in jets as it does in props for me, but it sure is as annoying as hell.

See my thread in this forum titled "Roll out Mayhem". I have the same problem and I agree it takes all the fun out of it. I have tried everything.

well in the small props I think it is because the Pilot is on the left which he is 180lbs. Just get rid of the pilot or set your rudder trim a little to the right.

it's a problem with the game, an internal glitch. call up microsoft and they'll help you fix it. i already called them about it and afterwards it worked fine. i'd tell you all but i lost my notes and can't remember what i did.

this might not be your problem, but it is good to be aware of the following.

when you turn on your computer, make sure your joystick is in a level area. This way windows will recognize that it is centered, since some joysticks like my ex-sidewinder precision pro and my current logitech wingman force 3d auto calibrate on start up.

the way that microsoft tells you to fix everything is by reinstalling your programs with windows in safe mode, and yes it works fine for me.

also, try getting the most recent joystick drivers just in case

i remember this happened to me many moons ago with FS98. started from out of the blue but i remember i found the problem immediately. sorry, I don't remember how to fix it at this time  Sad

not for this problem. all i was told to do was change the filename of one file and delete the other. now i really need to find my notes!

Would it be fs9.cfg? It is best to search on drice C: for it with hidden and system files option selected.
I have read a lot of forums where problems can be solved by renaming this file (with FS closed) and letting FS recreate it when it is started again. You have to put all your optional settings back in though, so write them down.

I would rename it, see if the problem is resolved and if not, just rename it back again.

Try turning all of the realism settings (sliders) off, except the top and bottom one. That worked for me!

A silly question, but just a thought.........

have you got a strong crosswind?

Hey guys, thanks a lot for all your inputs. I'm going to try all the advices given here to see which can solve the problem, hopefully!
I rule out crosswind since lately I don't even fly with winds at all, just thinking it could be worse. My current wind setting is to the minimum.

I had this problem too....totally out of the blue the other day. I installed the POSKY Cathay A330 and every plane started veering to the left. I deleted the plane and now the other aircraft seem to be fine. Was really bizarre.

But, I'm going to play around with the other aircraft and really make sure that I'm ok. Scared the crap out of me.....after building FS just the way I want it....got worried I caught a virus or something.

p.s. I don't use a joystick.

Hi all,

If you don't feel like calling Microsoft, you can try their support website:
http://support.microsoft.com/search/

But the only article I could find (Q260183) says...

"Aircraft Unexpectedly Banks to the Left or the Right"
Change the Fuel Selector Setting to Off (In the Fuel selector box, click Off.)
On the Aircraft menu, click Realism Settings.
Move the Current realism settings, slider all the way to the left (the Easy setting).

....If you ever find a solution, please tell us here!

For some reason now its only doing it with some of my aircraft....like the POSKY 757.

This is really annoying....totally out of the blue.

SoAmSky......did you make any changes to your FS settings before this started to occur....or install any add-ons? Maybe something we installed changed some config files?

Chgoan,

One day I finished playing with my FS, next day, out of the blue, planes veering off. Completely disturbing.

I download planes once in a while out of AVSIM. You said that after you installed a Posky 330 plane you were experiencing the same problem. It could be that. This is a possibility that I haven't ruled out yet. Now that you mentioned it, I'm going to remove my Posky planes to see what happens.

Yesterday I had an improvement by doing what Sebastian (LHsebi) suggested (reply #8). Try that and see. I'm gonna continue messing with it till I fix the problem. I'll post any findings.

SoAmSky,

Any luck on your debugging? I might just reinstall the POSKY 757s and see if that works.

I noticed that adjusting realism settings helps. I did that, and I had a tremendous improvement. However, yesterday it began veering off, so I went back to the realism setting and it seemed to fix it.

I don't know why sometimes it start veering off like that, but till I get a complete solution it helps messing the realism settings.

I'm not too familiar with the new MSFS's, but being one of 'dem dreaded "real" pilots myself, I can attest to the fact that it's not just torque that causes left turning errors, in fact, to my knowledge torque just causes a bank to the left! The other turning errors are spiraling slipstream, P-factor, and gyroscopic precession. If you can adjust any of those factors in the game, try that. Otherwise, I'm clueless.
I don't know, so this is my signature.

Does it do it on the first flight after loading FS?

I was messing about practising takeoffs in my PMDG 737-700 and after starting a flight, the plane became uncontrollable - one time it veered to the right and other times it took off on its own, accelerating to Vr and climbing. I guess that after the restart the autopilot was not disconnecting itself and was trying to turn to the selected heading (360 degrees by default).

Do the planes veer off on takeoff, and is it towards the selected heading?
If you take off in the opposite direction, does it veer to the other side?

Another problem is that when landing, some planes still try to keep the localiser heading, even with the autopilot disconnected. Once you've passed the localiser on landing, it tries to turn around.

regards,
Craig.

I also have this problem in FS2000, yeah its old but it happens, I was using the 777 and when i started the takeoff roll it just went left and i had no controll. I dont have the joystick or sidewinder, I have the FLIGHT SIM YOKE from CH Products. any help is appriciated because this makes the game no fun.

When the plane veers off, pause the simulation and have a good look at the throttle gauges. Are they all balanced? Are the throttle levers level?

Yeah all the throttles are even, that is what makes it more confusing. Everything is in the neutral position, and just as I atrat the T/O roll all hell breaks loose.

It's easy to get rid of. Just go to the realism settings and on one or two of them say that they will make the plane veer to the left. Just turn it off.

Hope this helps.
