Thought On This Please... organise a viewing area

Mon Mar 15, 2004 5:46 am

As it seems that vaiation photography, and general aircraft spotting seems to me to be a very popular sport in many places all over the world, it occured to me that in view of the security risks involved for airport operators, it would be a great idea for ALL airports around the world to organise a viewing area for people to watch and take photo's of aircraft.

My theory is if all airports did this, they could regulate where people went to watch, and even charge for the privalige.

What do you all think? Am I completely mad or would this be a workable idea?

Manchester in the UK has the right idea I believe, they have agreat spot right next to the taxiway where people can go. They charge £1.50 i think for an entire day's parking. That way they know who is there and can keep a closer eye on what's happening etc. They also have a snack bar, toilets and an aviation hobby shop.

Any thoughts on this?

Paul.

Hi Lekky-Man:
I am recommending the moving of this topic to the Aviation Photography forum. Perhaps you will get more replies there.

N243NW, nice aircraft by the way!!

I posted it originally in the civil aviation forum and it was moved.

You can draw your own conclusions!!

Doesn't matter. No one would bother. And it still doesn't keep people from wanting to do it elsewhere around the airport.

It'd be an excellent idea, I actually had that idea myself several times!

At MSP, they have a few levels of parking garages that are sometimes unoccupied, and have great views of the runway. They can have an area where you can sit down, photograph, chat, collect registrations, etc. I'm not sure what the demand would be here in MSP, as I know about 5-6 photographers, I assume there are some more spotters around here. And during the harsh winters, they can have a little indoors viewing building where you can watch the planes when the winds are at 35 mph with negative windchills!!

Actually, on second though I think there is a lot of demand here. We have a parking lot on Post Road here at MSP which runs along 30L/12R, it's obstructed by fences and cars going by, and I bet people would pay to get a better view! Most of the times when I go to Post Road, it's crowded with spotters!

Some airports have already gone this route...like MAN and the aviation viewing park. However whilst I as a photographer appreciate these facilities, I know I would also find it very frustrating being limited to just one area.

For me a large part of the joy of aviation photography is the ability to scout out new angles and get shots that others or should I say not many others have got.

How boring would it be if all the shots from LHR were from Myrtle Avenue? Great spot that it is it leaves few options.

Cheers!
