FS2002 Vs. FS2004

Sun Mar 21, 2004 3:57 am

Should I get it or not? Ive been debating whether I should make the purchase and was curious what you all av. enthusiasts have to say. What are some of the noteable differences between the two and what are the enhancements? Thanks in advance for your response.

Best Regards

FS2002 was good, but FS2004 is great!

Good points about 04:

  • Extremely good weather features - very realistic clouds

  • Better ATC

  • More older aircraft aswell as updated modern aircraft

  • I'm sure other people can add more to the list.

One thing that has stopped me buying 2k4 is that I can't use any of my add-ons on it that I brought for 2k2! They are gradually bringing out patches but this is my reason for not buying the new one. If my add ons would work on 2k4 I would get it before you could say 'add ons work!'

Hope this helps in your decision.

which addons would that be LHRMan?

Most work just fine (either without or after being updated).
    Here's a list I compiled: http://hornet.demon.nl/wiki/Wiki.jsp?page=FS2004CompatList
It's obviously not complete (I don't have all addons).
    I wish I were flying

    I have the following:

    World Airliners 744-772
    World Airports LAX/ATL/MAN etc
    British Airports Volume 1
    FS Traffic 2002
Dash 8 Proffesional (I do know this one works)
    Commuter Airlines (146/Stansted)
VFR Photographic Sth East - East (don't use)
Carrier Operations (does work on Fs 2k4)
    Dreamfleet 737-400
    London Heathrow Live

This is my collection plus a few downloaded aircraft which i can change into Fs2k4 but i am still unsure whether i should get. Do you have it and do you think it is a lot better than 2K2?

    Thanks LHRman  Big thumbs up

I got FS2004 - and to be honest, I think that FS2002 is better. Realistically to everyone probably FS2004 is better, but I think I like FS2002 better because I'm more used to it - and plus my computer has a hard time running FS2004 well with all its cool improvements and stuff (screen jumps a lot). If you have a computer with a good graphics card and that can handle FS2004, I think it may be a good choice.

No way FS2002 is better, FS2004 is very similar to FS2002, but has more stuff in it!! Weather is great, lots of files in 04 that won't work in 02, there's no pro/standard edition, ATC is better, AFCAD2 kicks ass, etc....

I went out and got FS2004 as soon as it came out. I have a fairly new computer also. Sadly, I used 2004 for a month before uninstalling it and going back to FS2K2. The main problem for me was that 2004 ran horribly on my computer. on FS2K2 I have the sliders on MAX and usually get 25-30 FPS...I have ultimate traffic on 100% and it works fantastic. On 2004, even just basic AI traffic was getting me only 7-10 FPS. Forget about landing at a scenery rich airport like O'Hare. That was impossible on 2004. Also, the night lighting was horrible on 2004 as I think my video software is too weak for the whole sim. Anyway, I agree that 2004 has superior weather images but for me FS2K2 is the best sim experience by far.
I'm not going to upgrade a new 2003 computer either. If Microsoft is going to release a new product, you shouldn't have to upgrade your system to make it fit the game.

I have the same problem with Fs2004 where my computer hangs on scenery rich airports like O'hare. My landing gear for 747-400 also keeps
collapsing on Push back from the gate. Has anyone else seen it?

I just bought 2004 and it should be arriving any day now. We'll see how the 777-281 flies on a simulator Big grin

    "World Airliners 744-772

    London Heathrow Live"

    - World Airliners 744-772 doesn't work, and i wouldnt bother trying because it does make your sim go all weird
    - World Airports LAX/ATL/MAN i'm not sure about
    - Same with British Airports Volume 1
    - FS Traffic 2002 may work, but i'd say customly adding flightplans with PAI, MRAI and just general flightplans is better, and free!
    - Dash 8 Pro has been made to work with FS2004 i think.
    - Commuter Airlines. I didn't actually install this onto FS2004 but i just switched the aircraft from my FS2002 folder to my FS2004 folder and i think they worked OK.
    - Carrier opertations, you say this does work.
    - Dreamfleet 737 doesn't work. I installed it and when i tried to do a wing view it cam up as like 3 different aircraft??? Also it screws up your sim.
    - London Heathrow Live doesn't work i don't think?

Personnally I think it was worth getting 2004 just for the AI improvements which are fantastic.
AI actually push back now instead of just turn on the spot and the AFCAD 2 so you get the right aircraft at the right gates is fantastic. Don't need much added scenery as long as theres a bit of real life traffic around!

World Airports LAX/ATL/MAN etc has a patch for FS2004, and it works. The buildings are great, but the taxiway markings are not as goos as FS2004 default ones, and the AFCADs are not as accurate as the ones for Ultimate Trafffic/Default FS04 scenery.

I will probably wait until there is an Ultimate Traffic AFCAD available for this scenery before I use it again.

    Regards,
    Craig.

After hesitating for long I went out to buy Fs2004 and to be
honest there is no way back for me. I added more than
1100 different AI aircrafts that means aloooooot of traffic around and not to mention all the addons (realy wonderful designed airports ect.,) so no way back for me!

Afcad2 kicks ass as Continental already stated and not to
forget the weather engine and the ATC both are very fine
     Big thumbs up

I prefer FS2004 for the weather but I hate the water textures. I am getting a new computer (Going from 2000 MHZ to 3400 MHZ, from 216GB to lots more) and I guess I won't have problems landing complicated aircrafts in rich scenery anymore.

But from now on I will never buy any add-ons anymore as I can't use the ones I bought for FS2002. You can actually get a reduction on Traffic2004 by sending them your Reg.Number of Traffic2002 before end of next week.

Ciao and good luck on your decision...

Just used 2004 on my new Pentium. It works OK, but I'm still unimpressed. There needs to be more realism, like blown tires, and visual damage. It would be neat if the ATC gets pissed at you for taking off without clearance, or he yells at you for doing something risky.

I'll wait till 2006, FS2K4 still not good enough for me, and I'll need to get a kick-a$$ PC.

Or maybe I should forget about MSFS and either use the $5 milion simulators or fly for real at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical Univ.  Big thumbs up
