Planespotting At JFK: Where?

Sun May 16, 2004 10:05 pm

Hi all

What's the best place for planespotting at JFK? I admit I'm embarrassed by my ignorance, especially given the fact that I'm a New Yorker... Thanks in advance for all the responses.

It depends what runways are being used.

I suggest checking our Art Brett's site; he is a NYC area photographer and he has made a page about the different spotting areas at JFK. It should answer any questions you have.

The Sunset Diner on 116th St in Rockaway Park. If you get a window seat you can see all the 13 arrivals and 31 depatures. The food isn't bad, but you are about 10 miles from the airport. You will have a view or Manhattan and LGA approach depending on the wind. It's not a place for pictures.

Hi, guys!

When Runway 13L-31R is in use, there is a road that goes in between FedEx and DHL cargo areas, and puts you right near the end of 13L. There is a small parking area, where sometimes even trucks go to rest. I've spent some time there not just to plane spot, but also when I need a time to relax.

Another area that was good for use was Delta's Terminal 3 roof parking lot. However, it's been years ago since I was there, and I don't know if it's still a good place.

hey WestIndian425

This spot you speak of at the end of 13L, do you still go there? I would think there is alot of security in that area.

Unfortunately, The Delta/Pan Am roof parking lot is no longer an option.

SouthPaw8669,

Well, I haven't been there in a few months, but I've never had any problems. I do admit that I think about the security factor, but there is a security post nearby at DHL, and FedEx has several security posts in the area; and if anyone was stupid enough to try to scale the fence to rampside/airside, with all of the Port Authority vehicles (both police and ramp agents) circling the area, I seriously doubt they'd get away with it, or even make it over the fence.

Well, since the Delta/Pan Am rooftop is no longer an option, I'm afraid it's really getting hard now, unless you're lucky enough to be on the JFK Expressway or the Van Wyck Expressway when aircraft are taxiing overhead.

Delta/Pan Am rooftop hasn't been an option in 10 years!

I've heard the customs building next to 13L/31R has barriers now, correct?  Sad

10 Years...has it been that long?!

I'm not sure about the US Customs Building, though. I never really went there. What about the area where the airport directory is (near the Van Wyck Expressway -- leaving the airport -- just after you pass under taxiways A and B)? That looks like a good spot. I just thought of it.

Well I have the option of working at JFK so I get to go inside but for those who can the best place I think for spotting is by the cargo area just off the JFK Expressway at the end of 13L the only problem is that you have to be lucky that arrivals are coming in on that day. I have seen some departures on 31R although rear. It is quite spectacular.

My personal JFK favorites:

(1) Terminal 1, upstairs at the Food Court. You do NOT need a boarding pass to enter this area. The food choices are sketchy (although the Chinese food isn't bad, just expensive) and you can grab a window seat and have a decent view of 31L/13R. This also includes a decent view of the T1 ramp. The runway view is not perfect - there are minor obstructions in the way - but basically it is a decent place to watch planes taking off. I am not sure if it is great for photography.

(2) AirTrain station at Terminal 6. At the far end by the elevators, near to T6, you are closest to runway 13L/31R but you have a great view of T6, T7, as well as the Saarinen building and some of T4. Granted most of the local traffic is all JetBlue, but there are decent views afforded when 31R is being used for landings. Often aircraft will taxi by going to T7 (UA & BA) and T9 (AA).

Otherwise, there is not a lot on-airport. My experience is that you will get funny looks from the PANYNJ police if you loiter too long at the airport terminal sign or anywhere in that area.
None shall pass!!!!

BeeWeeL15,

Another BWIA fan, eh!? Same here.

Actually the cargo area off the JFK Expressway isn't a bad option at all. I didn't think of there.

I used to work at JFK (worked for Dynair) and I loved going rampside, so I know how you guys feel. But it's been a while, so I'm sure those who work there now have a better knowledge, though I believe that the ideal areas for plane-spotting at JFK are scant at best.

This thread is a bit old but I just came across it yesterday while googling for places to go spotting at JFK, and just wanted to share one that others have probably already discovered--the 6th floor of the new JetBlue parking garage at T5/6. It's taller than the terminal 5, 6, and 7 buildings, so you get a great view out to the runways and taxiways. 4L was being used for takeoffs and 4R for landings while I was there and the views were great. And, there were actually quite a few people up there watching, and though security came by a couple of times, no one was hassled.
