FS2004 Hiccup, Is It The Ram Or The Hard Drive?

Tue May 18, 2004 6:17 pm

Hi all

I just installed FS2004 today, and it's a great sim.
But, I have realised that the computer takes quite a while to process things in the game. eg. the flight plan takes forever to load, the aircraft moves very slowly (freeze, move, freeze, move...) during Take off and landings. Also when I click the GPS or Radio board, it takes quite a while for it to show up.
Just wondering if anyone knows if it's the ram, hard drive, or anything else.

I have a comp with 256MB of ram, and loads of space on c drive, this is well past the minimum requirements. But for some reason it's still slow.

It would be great if anyone could help.

thanks

The symptoms you describe suggest a lack of RAM. As FS will need to keep reading and writing to and from the disk to get the info it needs. And I can tell you this disk swapping as its called takes one hell of a long time, compared to using whats in RAM.

This isn't the only reason it will run slow though. But until you give your system specs we cant diagnose the problem.

Eg, a graphics card with a lot of RAM would help as the textures can be kept in there. Also what type of CPU do you have? If its a Celeron or Duron then because these CPU's have reduced cache (memory on the chip) a huge bottleneck can occur going between the RAM and CPU.

Cant you tell I do Computer Engineering LOL

Thanks for the help
Computer specs:
-Intel Celeron 2.4GHz
-256MB DDR (333MHz ram)
-40GB 7200rpm Ultra ATA Hard Drive
-GEFORCE MX4000 128MB Graphics Card.

I don't much about computers, Copied the specs straight off the info sheet.

From the spec I would initially say try upgrading to 512MB RAM. Especially as RAM is dirt cheap these days. You can never have too much of it  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I did read reports of people with Radeons having performance issues. Cant remember how they were fixed though.

But I have an AMD 2800XP, 512Mb ram, GeForce 4 Ti4200, and have no problems with slow down etc.

I think it is the Celeron processor as well. They are to cheap to be runnning a game like FS 2004. I would upgrade to a Pentium 4 first, which I am sure most Intel boards accept both Celeron and P4 chips.

I said above that the Celeron would be causing a major bottleneck because of its limited cache.

But however 256mb RAM i feel is only just enough for WinXP. And I know people have seen a huge increase in performance from just doubleing the RAM.

If the performance is still slow. The next thing to change is definately the CPU.

Agreed...P4 with Hyper-Threading technology is great, runs FS extremely well. I just bought a HP Pavilion a few months ago with an Intel 3.0 HT (Prescott), 512mb RAM (upgraded to 1gb) and it does great. It's one (big) bottleneck is the GeForce FX 5200, which is making my graphics painfully slow. Any suggestions for a replacement video card, anyone?

I have a P4 2.4Ghz processor with 256mb RAM and it's a bit jumpy so I might upgrade to 512MB. RAM is very cheap nowadays. Let us know how you get on with an extra 256MB ZKSUJ!

512RAM is great. No Hiccups, no stoppages, just a real smooth and fast flight

ZKSUJ good to hear my advice worked Big grin

DC-10 I suggest you upgrade to 512mb RAM. It is very cheap these days considering what we had to pay for it 5 years ago!!!
