Just Ordered My First Model Aircraft!

Mon Jun 21, 2004 12:16 am

Hi there!

I'm so excited! I just ordered my first model aircraft! Well, first three!

An United 772, New Livery! Made by Gemini Jets, and will be released soon.

A China Eastern A346! Made by Gemini Jets.

An Air New Zealand 744, with Aragorn and Legolas! Made by Herpa, and will be released soon.

All 3 are 1:400 scale, and I think they look great. So, now in the time before they are delivered, I need to find a good place to display them, and this is where you guys can help! How, and where do you display your collection? Also, do you know where I could get a display case for a single aircraft? I know Herpa makes them for 744s but to a 1:200 scale, so it would be abit too big. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance! I can't wait till they arrive!

A huge shout out for gemini jets, I have 13 of them(of course all 1:400), two of which are QF colors!! Nice...

A display case is on my agenda as well, but I have a friend who put his 7 gemini jets on reflective glass(just a mirror on the shelf) and that was all the work that he needed to do. I have mine all together on a white shelf to make them stand out, nothing fancy because that will take away from their beauty.

If they're in a glass case, then it would seem rather difficult to compare/contrast and or mess around with them.

PS I highly suggest getting an a319 or 737 gemini of some kind and set it next to the 747/777. You will be amazed at their size difference, perhaps the most amazing illustration of the dramatic contrast in widebodies vs. narrowbodies. Sure you can see it in pictures and in real life, but I find a lot of people are quite intruiged by the major difference in size when they otherwise wouldve never noticed before.

Nice choices

Where can you buy the actual airport taxiways, tarmacs, runways, etc. for 1/400 or 1/500 models? I mean like the taxiways, for example, that those models shown in those links are on. CAn you buy full sections and set them up however you want? Or maybe already full scaled airports? The taxiways in those pictures look to even have fake grass as well. Pretty cool!

The only company that I know of that make single foils is 'Pixelport'.

Click on 'single foils', then 'taxiways'.

They also sell sets of foils that are pre-designed with taxiways and parking stands. Also, if you wanted to design an entire scale airport, you can purchase the cd that they sell. The cd has all their foils on it. you use this to design your airport, then order the foils off them -I ordered this the other day. If you'd like a premade airport, try Click on 'wings', then scroll down to the bottom of the page and click 'dioramas'. You'll find they sell starter kits, small foils, large foils, and also a huge one.

As for fake grass, I found this website, they have fake grass sheets, fake trees, and that powder some people use as grass. I'm planning on purchasing grass and trees from them for the finishing touches of my airport.

Hope this helps!

Actually, I have been doing a bit of model aquisition myself. These are definitely not my first models, but they are very nice (but quite pricey).

The two that have purchase lately are mahogany, and I'm not sure of the scale (but they are quite large). They are a United (grey colors) 727-200, and a Delta (old colors) MD-88. Big and beautiful. I'll have to take some pics and post them.

I have recently updated my collection. In June I bought an American Airlines 777, which I'm very happy with.

Then today I bought two more models. The first being an Eastern 757, which I've always had my eye on.

And I also bought an Eastern white top 727, with "Whisper Jet" on the #2 engine. It looks great.
