Smoke/Fire In FS2004...how To Turn Off?

Tue Jul 06, 2004 11:13 am

After a hard landing or tail scrape in FS2004 with a Opensky 747 (or others) it will show fire and smoke. How the heck do you turn this off without restarting flight simulator? Changing planes doesn't help, the smoke/fire stays in the same location so if you switch from the hard-landing 747 to a 717...you have bonfires about 50 feet away from the aircraft. Argh! How do you turn off this "feature"?

I have the same problems with POSKY 744's. After take off, sparks come out from the ass of the aircraft. Upon Landing, my aircraft just sinks straight into the ground and goes into the runway, weird? Is there any patches for this to make it handle like a default aircraft.
I also find that the reactions are sluggish, and that the engine power is screwed up (ie it stresses at about 70% N1 and starts to taxi at 30% compared to 50 or so % on default aircraft). I am worried about my flying my VA as it may crash upon landing or stall after take off as it has done to me many times.

Is it maybe an FDE issue?

Don't know how to turn it off, but on take off, set power to 95N1. then do a very gentle rotae at over 175KIAS. You should lift off with out a scratch.

Also, Just one question about our 744. When I am at FL270 and at cruise speed of Mach 0.84 (AKL-LAX), the setting is at 78N1, thats not right as I will run out of fuel when I reach LAX, how do you get the N1 setting back to the low or mid 50s?
this only happens on the POSKY aircraft. I have to keep topping up the fuel mid flight.

I think the cruise problem will be FDE related... do a search on avsim or flightsim.com.

Absolutely right about the sparks on takeoff, such a nuisance I have stopped flying the POSKY 744 all that much but I do love the Chelsea Rose scheme I have for it. I found the only way to avoid it, as with you, is to rotate very gently at a high VR speed of 170 kias+.

Actually, according to the manual the normal Vr is 171KIAS, but you have to make sure that you rotate AFTER this point. Nice and easy rotation does it very well.
Pull up to about 5-7 degrees until you lift off then pull to 10 degrees, gear up and then climb at 12 degrees.

It helps to have a small 'spot plane' view in the left hand upper corner to see when you have lifted off. You can do this by pressing 'ctrl + Q'. However, do not take you eyes off the fligt panel as the aircraft is likely to point the nose downward if you ease off. Only use the spot plane view to check you have lifted off safely.
At about 1000 feet, turn on the AP and engage the Vertical speed at about 2000-2400 feet per minute. Keep holding on the joystick until the AP intercepts with your nose up altitude.

On FS2002 you can press I to put on smoke but it only works on certain aircraft - so try Just " I " and tell me if it works by instant message or on here!

European - Lol...the smoek feature is only for effects like contrails etc no crash effects  Wink/being sarcastic

Its the POSKY FDE , simply that. Also try put a little bit of fuel for takeoff (say 20%) then takeoff and then once at cruise put more fuel in. Unrealistic but hey...

Also try using the default 747-400 dyanmics.

Everybody knows that! (except you, apparently Big grin) He's referring to the tailstrike sparks. Research your info first Laugh out loud

Just fly the plane the way it should be flown. Takeoff at 171 Knots if you have a full load. But if you are flying JFK-LHR you dont need 100% fuel. Only put in the fuel you need to fly to your destination and about 50 minutes extra. Also dont forget about Taxi and takeoff.
ZKSUJ: I would not turn the AP on that early. No fun. Unless it is bad weather or you are on you last leg and just want to get to your destination why not try to hand fly up to 7,000ft. But I guess you leave the rest of the AP off and just use the VS hold? Thats not to bad of an idea.

On landing looks like you guys are hitting the ground to hard or to heavy. Thats why you should have the correct fuel needed for the flight so you are not to heavy for landing. you need to use your flaps and correct speed too.

Flymia has a good point! Try do that.

Anyways "Also try using the default 747-400 dyanmics"
SA006-How the heck do you do that?

Well you take the default 747-400 AIR file , copy and paste it into your POSY 744 file. Make a backup of your POSKY Air File then remove it from the aircrafts folder. Then , open your POSKY 747's CFG file. The where it says "sim=(the old FDE file)" Replace that with the name of the default 747 airfile...which I think is "b747-400".

Hope it works! If you have any problems feel free to contact me via my profile.

Ugh, i feel your pain ppl. I still fly Meljet's ultra-fuel unefficient hard-to-control 747-400 but its much better than POSKy's, which can be very very irritating

according to the manual the normal Vr is 171KIAS

Hmm... that's higher than the VR speeds of both my real world SAA flights last month flying LHR-JNB-LHR - and that's quite a heavy fuel and pax load. Just goes to show you can't trust the POSKY flight dynamics.

meljet is hard to control and fuel inefficient? You mut be smoking.

Meljet's FDE are far superior to POSKY. Not to mention actual exterior design is also significantly better.

POSKY is way overrated.

Considering it's free it's still downright near perfect....certainly better than any payware I've seen.

If you don't want the sparks just go into the aircraft.cfg and disable the sparks.fx

Hi Maverick!

You are getting the sparks because, of course, you are dragging the tail. Try taking off at a shallow angle until you reach 500 ft or so.

I never figured out how to make the sparks go away either. But, you can certainly remove the sparks. Go into your ACFT CFG file, and look for the heading "[EFFECTS]". Under the heading, you will find "concrete=Opensky_sparks, 1". By removing this file, it should get rid of the sparks permanently.

Hope this helped.

I just fly all the way to my destinations trailing smoke--I've also had tailstrikes on POSKY 757s; however that was due to me accidentaly pressing 'F' which folded the wings--but there was no visual effect from pressing it--as a result the aircraft would not rotate.

It IS true that the Meljet FDE makes the 747 so unresponsive to turns, unless you have some new edition. I also find it hard to reach the specific destinations toward the max of its range. (about 500nm from the max, range)
Now you're really flying
