20 Euros To Register Fsuipc?!?! Isn't It Free?

Wed Jul 07, 2004 2:07 am

Hi there....I need some urgent help.

I downloaded FSUIPC.dll from Vatsim to run Vatsim. I opened up squawkbox and typed that i wanted a clearance (this was my first flight) . It said I had to register FSUIPC. So I went to register FSUIPC (I thought it was a free register where you give your e-mail for updates etc) and I found out it was 17 Euros !!!! Now being so excited about Vatsim I payed. Now after 22 hours logged on Vatsim I would like to know if there is a free version?

Thanks

I think that the author actually released all of the modules for it for Free on his website a while ago - I know because I got some parts from there for my ERJ panel.

For nearly 10 years he paid for development (tools, time), distribution and support out of his own pockets and never even got a thankyou note from more than a handfull of people despite millions using it.
When he could no longer afford that last year he tried through donations to get money to continue development. In 5 months he got only about €250 from a handfull of people (including €50 from me and €100 from one other person I know).
He also received a lot of hatemail from people who considered it unethical to ask for money after 10 years of releasing it for free...

To make a long story short, it was either charge a modest amount (remember, free upgrades forever...) or have the world do without.

For freeware addons that need FSUIPC, the author of the addon can ask to get a free license to make use of it. Authors of commercial addons now have to pay, most do so.
People who pay for FSUIPC (or donated in the past) the module will work with any addon (licensed or not) as well as giving a lot more functionality.

The attitude displayed here by some about now having to pay for FSUIPC is typical of the incredible hostility many addon developers are encountering from their users and is the direct cause a lot of them either give up or stop taking support requests seriously.

I have to agree with Jwenting, I think that Peter Dowson deserves every cent! The amount of work is put in is simply awesome and it makes the enjoyment so much greater for the rest of us.

I feel stupid asking this but what exactly does FSUIPC do? Also, how does it relate to Eric marciano's A330/320 panels? I saw this news item on Eric's website:

6-May-2004: Good news for all the "flight simmers" who have tried to use my radar gauge or TCAS with FS2004: Pete Dowson has published all the codes so that my freeware gauges can be used with the freeware edition of FSUIPC. Thanks Pete !!
You can have a look at the Pete Dowson's forum here, or enter directly one of the following key in FSUIPC:

A320 panel - A320.gau - key: VSB5 4OK5 UVWN
A330 panel - A330.gau - key: T21S 7RQ3 EN2R
Mirage 4000 - M4000.gau - key: UDSV JEI1 NK29
F-16 panel - F16.gau - key: DSVT JE5S 6DUO

What does the code unlock?

FSUIPC provides access to internal data inside FS to both gauges, other modules and external programs above and beyond that which is provided by the FS SDK.

This includes advanced weather features, keyboard mapping of control buttons, etc. etc.

It does a lot more, but the documentation will provide the details  Smile

Sure he put in time and such, but how much $$ did he put in? I think 17 euros is rather high, it seems a lot of places these days are starting to ask for moolah.

I agree that he has worked a lot.......but I also agree with Continental. The price is high and it might not be worth that price.

CO, he put in literally thousands of pounds a year over a period of about 10 years.

Plus he doesn't get all the $20. The e-commerce site gets about a third (usually, some get more) of that, leaving him about $13 on a sale.
Then there's the support cost, the support forum costs money as well to run.

I don't doubt you, I believe he spent thousands, but besides the forum costs, what else would he have to dump thousands of pounds on??

compilers, documentation, etc.
An MSDN subscription alone costs some €1500 a year, Visual Studio costs roughly €700 a year to keep current, etc.
Plus quite likely running several PCs with several operating systems and FS versions in order to test on multiple platforms.

Not everyone uses pirated copies of their software...

And of course he's spending a LOT of time on it, time he could have spent on things that make money.
Had he rented out his services as a consultant he might make €100-€150 an hour.

I downloaded an older version, (2.975 I think) which was the last free fully functional version, works fine.
